Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Yukon, 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Refer to SIR CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to ZONE 3 in SIR.

    Important:  Let the SIR coil hang freely after removal.

  2. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (DRIVER-SIDE) in SIR.
  3. Remove and discard the bearing retainer using J 23653-SIR  and J 42137  .

  4. If standard column, remove the following parts from the steering shaft assembly:
    1. The cam orientation plate (4)
    2. The turn signal cancel cam assembly (3)
    3. The upper bearing spring (2)
    4. The thrust washer (1)

  5. If tilt column, remove the following parts from the steering column shaft assembly:
    1. The cam orientation plate (5)
    2. The turn signal cancel cam assembly (4)
    3. The upper bearing spring (3)
    4. The upper bearing inner race seat (2)
    5. The inner race (1)
