Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Does the secondary air injection (AIR) pump run constantly? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 4.
- Remove the AIR pump relay. Turn ON the ignition. Does the AIR pump run constantly? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to step 5.
- Command the AIR pump ON and OFF with a scan tool. Does the AIR pump turn ON and OFF? If yes, go to step 13. If no, go to step 6.
- Turn ignition off. Probe the AIR pump relay control circuit at the fuse block with a test light connected to battery positive. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to step 46. If no, go to step 54.
- Turn ignition off. Remove the AIR pump relay. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Probe the AIR pump relay battery positive voltage circuit at the fuse block with a test light connected to a good ground. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 29.
- Probe the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the AIR pump relay with a test light connected to a good ground. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Connect a test light to battery positive voltage and probe the control circuit of the AIR pump relay at the fuse block. Command the AIR pump relay ON and OFF with a scan tool. Does the test light turn ON and OFF? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 25.
- Turn ignition off. Install the AIR pump relay. Disconnect the connector for the AIR pump. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Probe the AIR pump supply voltage circuit of the AIR pump with a test light connected to a good ground. Command the AIR pump relay ON and OFF with a scan tool. Does the test light turn ON and OFF? If yes, go to step 12. If no, go to step 30.
- Is ignition E fuse open? If yes, go to step 36. If no, go to step 50.
- Disconnect the connector for the AIR pump. Remove the AIR vacuum control solenoid fuse. Probe the AIR pump supply voltage circuit at the AIR pump with a test light connected to a good ground. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to step 48. If no, go to step 28.
- Probe the AIR pump ground circuit of the AIR pump with a test light connected to battery positive. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to step 42. If no, go to step 49.
- Start and idle the engine until Closed Loop operation is achieved. Monitor the Short Term FT on the scan tool. Command the AIR relay ON with a scan tool. Does the Short Term FT increase by a minimum of 12 percent in 6 seconds? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
- Disconnect the AIR solenoid connector. Probe the AIR vacuum control solenoid ground circuit with a test light connected to battery positive. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 49.
- Probe the AIR control solenoid feed circuit with a test light connected to a good ground. Command the AIR relay ON and OFF with a scan tool. Does the test light turn ON and OFF? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 27.
- Connect the AIR vacuum control solenoid connector. Disconnect the vacuum hose form the AIR shut-off valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to the AIR shut-off valve hose. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR relay ON and OFF with the scan tool. Does the vacuum increase to more than 14 in. Hg then drop back to zero inches? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 19.
- Connect the vacuum hose to the AIR shut-off valve. Disconnect the AIR pump crossover hose at the exhaust check valve. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Is air pressure present at the AIR crossover hose? If yes, go to step 45. If no, go to next step.
- Turn OFF the engine. Connect the AIR pump crossover hose at the exhaust check valve. Disconnect the AIR pump crossover hose at the shut-off valve. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Is air pressure present at the outlet of the AIR shut-off valve? If yes, go to step 52. If no, go to step 24.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect the vacuum hose between the shut-off valve and the AIR solenoid at the AIR solenoid. Install a vacuum gauge at the AIR vacuum control solenoid port. Start engine. Command the AIR pump relay ON and OFF with a scan tool. Does vacuum increase to 14 in. Hg then drop back to zero? If yes, go to step 22. If no, go to next step.
- Disconnect the AIR vacuum control solenoid supply vacuum line from the inlet of the AIR solenoid. Install a vacuum gauge at the vacuum hose. Start and idle the engine. Is vacuum more than 14 in Hg? If yes, go to step 41. If no, go to next step.NOTE: Inspect the vacuum check valve for proper installation. The tapered side of check valve goes towards the vacuum source.
- Remove the check valve. Install a vacuum gauge in the engine side of the vacuum hose. Start and idle the engine. Is the vacuum more than 14 in. Hg? If yes, go to step 44. If no, go to step 23.
- Inspect the vacuum hose between the AIR vacuum control solenoid and the AIR shut-off valve for a restriction or loose condition and repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 59.
- Inspect the vacuum hose between the vacuum check valve and the vacuum source port for a restriction or a loose condition. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 51. If no, check for mechanical Engine problem.
- Turn OFF the engine. Disconnect the AIR pump outlet hose at the AIR shut-off valve. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Is air pressure present at the outlet hose? If yes, go to step 55. If no, go to step 26.
- Test the AIR pump relay control circuit for an open or short to voltage between the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the relay. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 43.
- Disconnect the AIR pump outlet hose at the AIR pump. Command the AIR relay ON and OFF with a scan tool. Does the air pressure flow at the AIR pump outlet? If yes, go to step 38. If no, go to step 56.
- Test the AIR vacuum control solenoid feed circuit for the following conditions between the AIR vacuum control solenoid fuse and the AIR vacuum control solenoid: A short to ground, high resistance or open circuit. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 57.
- Test the AIR vacuum control solenoid feed circuit for a short to voltage circuit between the AIR vacuum control solenoid fuse and the AIR solenoid. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59.
- Is the AIR fuse open? If yes, go to step 31. If no, go to step 33.
- Test the AIR pump supply voltage circuit for an open or for high resistance between the AIR pump relay and the AIR pump. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 40.
- Test the battery positive voltage circuit between the AIR fuse and the AIR pump relay for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to next step.
- Test the AIR pump supply voltage circuit or a short to ground between the AIR pump relay and the AIR pump. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 35.
- Test the battery positive voltage circuit between the battery fuse and the AIR fuse for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to next step.
- Test the battery positive voltage circuit between the AIR fuse and the AIR pump relay for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 47.
- Turn ignition off. Install the AIR relay. Disconnect the AIR pump connector. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. Command the AIR pump relay ON and OFF with a scan tool. Does the fuse open? If yes, go to step 54. If no, go to step 56.
- Test for a short to ground in the ignition 1 voltage circuit between the ignition E fuse and the AIR pump relay. Replace the fuse as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to next step.
- Remove the AIR relay. Install a new ignition E fuse. Operate the A/C compressor and rear defroster. Does the ignition E fuse open? If yes, go to step 39. If no, go to step 54.
- Inspect for a restriction or a leak in the AIR pump inlet or outlet hoses and repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 56.
- Inspect the related components on this circuit. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59.
- Inspect for poor connections at the AIR pump relay electrical connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 54.
- Inspect for poor connections at the AIR vacuum control solenoid electrical connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 57.
- Inspect for poor connections at the AIR pump electrical connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 56.
- Inspect for poor connections at the PCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 58.
- Inspect the vacuum line between the check valve and the AIR vacuum control solenoid for leaks, restrictions or looseness. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 51. If no, go to step 53.
- Inspect the AIR exhaust check valve and the exhaust manifold for leaks or restrictions. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 59.
- Repair the short to ground in the AIR pump relay control circuit. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 59. If no, go to step 58.
- Repair the short to ground between the battery supply and the AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step 59.
- Repair the short to voltage in the AIR pump supply voltage circuit. After repairs, go to step 59.
- Repair the open or high resistance in the ground connection or the ground circuit. After repairs, go to step 59.
- Repair the open in the ignition 1 voltage circuit between the ignition E fuse and the AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step 59.
- Replace the vacuum hose. After replacing hose, go to step 59.
- Replace the AIR crossover hose. After replacing hose, go to step 59.
- Replace the vacuum check valve of the AIR pump. After replacing check valve, go to step 59.
- Replace the AIR pump relay. After replacing relay, go to step 59.
- Replace the AIR shut-off valve. After replacing shut-off valve, go to step 59.
- Replace the AIR pump. After replacing pump, go to step 59.
- Replace the AIR vacuum control solenoid valve. After replacing solenoid valve, go to step 59.
- Replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2.
- Using scan tool, observe the stored information and capture information. If scan tool displays any undiagnosed DTCs, diagnose affected DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
