WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Savana Special, 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2002 GMC Savana, and 2002 Chevrolet Chevy Express. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Required Tools: Drum To Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge (J-21177-A).
NOTE: The rear brakes must be adjusted manually after replacing the brake shoes.
  1. Raise the vehicle. Remove the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  .
  2. Using the Drum To Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge, measure the inside diameter of the brake drum.
  3. Position the Clearance Gage over the linings of the rear brake shoes.
  4. Turn the star wheel on the adjusting screw until there is approximately 0.020" (0.50 mm) clearance between the Gage and the shoe linings at their widest point.
  5. Using a punch and hammer, remove and discard the knockout plug in the backing plate which is directly behind the starwheel adjuster.
  6. Install the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  .
  7. Tighten the adjusting screw until light drag is present when the drum is rotated. The brake lining drag should be equal at both drums.
  8. Apply the brake pedal 2 times in order to center the brake shoes on the locating pins.
  9. Check the drums again for light drag. Adjust as necessary.
  10. Install an adjusting hole cover in the backing plate.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Check the park brake adjustment. See PARKING BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  .
