Noise Diagnosis - Front Suspension

DEFINITION: Any noise from the front of the vehicle that is induced by VEHICLE SPEED or DRIVING TERRAIN as related to the front suspension.

  1. Did you review the system descriptions and perform the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, see SYMPTOMS - SUSPENSION GENERAL DIAGNOSIS .
    NOTE: Compare this vehicle to an identical vehicle in order to determine if the customer's concern is a normal characteristic of the vehicle.
  2. Attempt to duplicate the condition. Road test the vehicle. Did you duplicate the condition? If so, go to next step. If not, system is OK.
  3. Is the noise reactive to vehicle load or speed? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  7.
  4. Measure the tire pressure. Adjust as necessary to 32 psi. Inspect the tires for wear. Repair as necessary. Inspect the wheel nuts for looseness. Tighten as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  14. If not, go to next step.
  5. Inspect the front wheel bearings. Repair as necessary. Refer to WHEEL BEARINGS DIAGNOSIS . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  14. If not, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the front transaxle for noises. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  14. If not, go to next step.
  7. Bounce the front of the vehicle in order to duplicate the noise. Did you duplicate the noise? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  9.
  8. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE . Inspect the front suspension components for looseness. Tighten as necessary. Refer to FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS in FRONT SUSPENSION SYSTEM .
  9. Install the J-39570 Chassis Ear or equivalent. Bounce the front of the vehicle. Use the J-39570 or equivalent in order to locate the source of the noise. If necessary, road test the vehicle. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  14. If not, go to next step.

  10. Inspect the ball joints and steering components for the following conditions:
    • Lack of lubrication. Lubricate and repair where applicable.
    • Looseness in the ball joints. Repair as necessary. Refer to BALL JOINT INSPECTION .
    • Looseness in the outer tie rod ends. Repair as necessary. Refer to TIE ROD END REPLACEMENT - OUTER in POWER STEERING SYSTEM .
    • Looseness in the steering gear or the inner tie rods. Repair as necessary. Refer to POWER STEERING GEAR REPLACEMENT in POWER STEERING SYSTEM .
    Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  14. If not, go to next step.
  11. Inspect the front struts. Repair as necessary. Refer to STRUTS OR SHOCK ABSORBERS ON-VEHICLE TESTING . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  14. If not, go to next step.
  12. Inspect the front stabilizer shaft and stabilizer shaft links for damage. Repair as necessary. Refer to STABILIZER SHAFT REPLACEMENT or to STABILIZER SHAFT LINK REPLACEMENT in FRONT SUSPENSION SYSTEM . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  14. If not, go to next step.
  13. Inspect the control arms for damage. Repair as necessary. Refer to LOWER CONTROL ARM REPLACEMENT in FRONT SUSPENSION SYSTEM . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to next step.
  14. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, system is OK. If not, go back to step  3.
