Wheel Bearings Diagnosis

  1. Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, see SYMPTOMS - SUSPENSION GENERAL DIAGNOSIS .
  2. Road test the vehicle in order to verify the customer's complaint. Does the vehicle operate normally? If so, system is OK. If not, go to next step.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE . Inspect the tires and wheels for damage. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  8. If not, go to next step.
  4. Install the J-39570 Chassis Ear. See Figure. Road test the vehicle in order to verify the noise is from the wheel bearings. Is the noise from the wheel bearings? If so, go to step  7. If not, go to next step.
    1. Remove the brake rotors and the drums, if equipped. Refer to the following appropriate procedure:
      CAUTION: Support the vehicle by the lower control arms or the rear axle in order to prevent movement while inspecting the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
    2. Install the J-8001 Dial Indicator.
    3. Verify the J-8001 contacts the hub flange.
    4. Push and pull on the hub in order to inspect the total travel indicated by the dial indicator.
    Is the measurement greater than 0.05 mm (0.002 in)? If so, go to step  7. If not, go to next step.
  6. Determine if the wheel hub and axle flange has excessive runout. Was the runout greater than 0.132 mm (0.005 in)? If so, go to next step. If not, system is OK.
  7. Replace the wheel bearing. Refer to WHEEL HUB, BEARING, AND SEAL REPLACEMENT in FRONT SUSPENSION SYSTEM or to WHEEL BEARING/HUB REPLACEMENT - REAR (FWD) or WHEEL BEARING/HUB REPLACEMENT - REAR (AWD) in Rear Suspension. Did you complete the repair?
  8. Road test the vehicle in order to verify the repair. Does the vehicle operate normally? If so, system is OK. If not, go back to step  3.
