P1 Planetary Module & C4 Clutch Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During reassembly, use oil-soluble grease with a low melting point (petrolatum or equivalent) to temporarily retain parts, butt seal rings, scarf-cut seal rings and hook-type seal rings.
NOTE: DO NOT reuse old clutch piston assembly.
  1. Position main housing so rear of the housing is facing upward. Apply petrolatum to inside and outside diameters of NEW C4 clutch piston assembly. Align clutch piston assembly with seal downward and install assembly by gently tapping until piston is fully and evenly seated. See Figure.
  2. Position P1 ring gear so outside splines are facing downward. Install P1 ring gear and rotate gear until C3 friction plates are engaged. Ensure P1 ring gear is seated against thrust plates of C3 clutch backplate assembly. Install P1 planetary module and rotate module until it drops into place. See Figure.
    WARNING: Installation of thrust bearing in the wrong direction (Blue stripe not showing) could result in destruction of transmission.
  3. Position thrust bearing assembly, with Blue stripe visible and upward (away from P1 planetary module), then install thrust bearing onto P1 planetary module. See Figure.
  4. Spring assemblies can be reused. If required, squeeze spring assembly tabs with pliers to ensure spring assemblies are retained to spring plate. The piston return spring assemblies should snap into place. Install 3 piston return springs assemblies onto C4 spring plate. See Figure.
  5. Align spring plate and piston return spring assemblies so spring assemblies face upward. Install spring plate into main housing. Starting with C4 clutch friction plate, alternately install 5 friction plates and 4 reaction plates into the main housing. See Figure.
  6. Position C4 clutch backplate assembly with groove upward. Install backplate assembly into main housing. See Figure.
    CAUTION: DO NOT install special tools onto gear thrust plate rivets of C3 clutch backplate assembly. Tools could damage the rivets. DO NOT damage P1 planetary carrier bushing when installing Bar and Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, into main housing. Threaded rod of tool must pass through bushing but not touch it.
  7. Install Bar and Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, and the C3/C4 Piston Spring Compressor (J-44530) or equivalent, into main housing. Ensure spring compressor does not touch backplate rivets or bushing. See Fig 1.
  8. Compress C4 piston return spring assemblies until retaining ring groove is visible, then install spiral retaining ring and retaining ring. Ensure ring leafs do not overlap, but are on top of each other. Carefully remove special tool set.
