Leak Test

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Position torque converter on workbench with pump hub upward. Set Torque Converter Leak Test Plug (J-43763) or equivalent, nut to middle of threaded portion, and install leak test plug tool into converter hub. See Fig 1.
  2. Install Torque Converter Leak Test Fixture (J-21369-F) or equivalent, onto torque converter and leak test plug tool. See Fig 2. Tighten bottom nut to seal leak test plug tool into converter. Tighten upper nut firmly against leak test fixture.
  3. Connect an air hose to leak test plug fitting and apply 75 psi (517 kPa) maximum air pressure, then disconnect air hose. Submerge torque converter into a tank of water and watch for any air bubbles indicating a leak. If a leak is present, replace torque converter. After testing, press on relief valve to bleed air pressure from torque converter.
