Rotating Clutch Module: Reassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During reassembly, use oil-soluble grease with a low melting point (petrolatum or equivalent) to temporarily retain parts, butt seal rings, scarf-cut seal rings and hook-type seal rings.
  1. Install 3 piston seal rings onto the C2 clutch piston. See Figure. Lubricate C2 balance piston seal and piston inside diameter and outside diameter seal rings with petrolatum.
  2. Position rotating clutch housing on workbench with rear of the housing facing upward. Install a NEW "O" ring into bottom groove on inner hub of rotating clutch housing. See Figure.
  3. Position C2 clutch piston on workbench so rear of piston is facing upward. Position C2 balance piston so rubber seal is downward. Install C2 balance piston onto C2 clutch piston. Lubricate rubber seals on balance piston with petrolatum. See Figure.
  4. Install C2 clutch piston with C2 balance piston attached into rotating clutch housing. Ensure C2 clutch piston is seated on rotating clutch housing.
  5. Push C2 balance piston below retaining ring groove on housing. Install retaining ring. Ensure retaining ring is seated completely around rotating clutch housing. See Figure.
  6. Position C2 piston return spring assembly so notches of assemblies are facing and aligned with tangs of C2 clutch piston. Install return spring assembly into C2 clutch piston. See Figure.
  7. Position C1 piston housing so rear of housing is facing upward. Install C1 piston housing into C2 clutch piston. See Figure.
  8. Position rotating clutch housing on base of Bar and Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, so rear of housing is facing upward. Install C2 Piston Return Spring Compressor (J-43776-2) or equivalent, onto shaft of bar and stud assembly. Install retaining ring of return spring compressor tool onto upper surface of cup portion of tool. See Figure.
  9. Install spring of return spring compressor tool set onto shaft of bar and stud tool assembly. Align a notch of return spring compressor handle with ball of C1 piston housing. Install ball bearing, washer and wing nut of ball and stud assembly. See Figure.
  10. Compress C2 piston return spring assembly until retaining ring groove on inner hub of rotating clutch housing is visible. Install retaining ring. Ensure ring is seated all around groove on inner hub. Remove all special tools.
  11. Install C1 piston inside diameter seal ring and outside diameter seal ring onto C1 clutch piston. Lubricate seal rings with petrolatum.
  12. Position rotating clutch housing on workbench so rear of housing is facing upward. Position C1 clutch piston so spring indents are facing upward. Install C1 clutch piston into C1 piston housing. Ensure piston is fully seated in the housing.
  13. Position C1 piston return spring assembly so springs are facing and aligned with spring pockets of C1 clutch piston. Install C1 piston return spring assembly into C1 clutch piston.
  14. Position rotating clutch housing on base of Bar and Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, so rear of housing is facing upward. Install retaining ring onto inner hub of rotating clutch housing. Install C1 Piston Return Spring Compressor (J-43777) or equivalent, onto shaft of bar and stud assembly. Center return spring compressor tool on C1 piston return spring assembly. See Figure.
  15. Install extension of return spring compressor tool set onto shaft of bar and stud tool assembly. Install ball bearing, washer, and wing nut onto threaded end of bar and stud tool. See Figure.
  16. Compress C1 piston return spring assembly until retaining ring groove on rotating clutch housing inner hub is visible. Install retaining ring onto rotating clutch housing inner hub. See Figure. Remove all special tools.
  17. Position rotating clutch housing on workbench so rear of housing is facing upward. Lubricate rubber seals on C1 balance piston with petrolatum.
  18. Position C1 balance piston so rubber seal is facing downward. Install balance piston into C1 piston housing until balance piston is below retaining ring groove on the C1 piston housing.
  19. Install retaining ring on top of balance piston. Ensure retaining ring is seated in its groove. See Figure.
  20. Install 2 butt seal rings onto turbine shaft. Position turbine shaft on workbench so rear of shaft is facing upward. Position rotating clutch housing with rear of turbine shaft so rear of clutch housing is facing upward. Install rotating clutch housing onto rear of turbine shaft. See Figure.
  21. Install retaining ring onto turbine shaft. Ensure retaining ring is seated completely around turbine shaft. See Figure.
  22. Starting with a C1 clutch reaction plate, alternately install 6 C1 clutch reaction plates and 6 C1 clutch friction plates onto turbine shaft. See Figure.
  23. Position C1 Clutch Backplate Selector (J-44525-2) or equivalent, with turbine shaft so the countersunk holes of tool are facing upward. See Fig 1. Position tool onto turbine shaft inside rotating clutch housing.
  24. Align half-circle portion of tool with turbine shaft so inner ridge of half-circle is facing downward. See Fig 1. Slide inner ridge of tool part into turbine shaft retaining ring groove.
  25. Align holes of half-circle portion of tool with countersunk holes of full-circle part of tool and hand-install 2 bolts and tighten to 48 INCH lbs. (5.4 N.m).
    NOTE: The shift quality of transmission depends heavily on selecting correct C1 clutch backplate.
  26. For each tab of C1 clutch backplate selector tool, place flat surface (tabbed end) of tool tab and rod (1) onto top surface of half-circle part of tool (2). See Fig 1. Try to slide tabbed end of tool (3) into retaining ring groove of turbine shaft. If tab fits into groove, record 4-digit ID number of stem of tool associated with tab.
  27. If no tabs of the stem and tab tool fits into retaining ring groove, select C1 clutch backplate using ID No. 6221. If one or more tabs of tool fit into the retaining ring groove, select C1 clutch backplate with ID number corresponding with highest number recorded in previous step. See C1 CLUTCH BACKPLATE SELECTION  table.
  28. Remove all special tools from turbine shaft. Align selected C1 clutch backplate so beveled edge of backplate is facing upward. Install backplate onto turbine shaft, install retaining ring, lift C1 clutch backplate and install spiral retaining ring into backplate. See Fig 2.
    CAUTION: Installation of thrust bearing assembly into rear of turbine shaft in wrong direction (Blue stripe NOT showing) could result in destruction of transmission.
  29. Align bearing assembly so Blue stripe on thrust bearing assembly is facing away from turbine shaft. Install thrust bearing assembly into turbine shaft. See Fig 3. Ensure Blue stripe is visible.
  30. Center C1 clutch plates and install C1 drive hub over C1 clutch plates. Ensure C1 drive hub has seated on thrust bearing assembly. See Fig 3.
    CAUTION: Installation of thrust bearing assembly into rear of C1 drive hub in wrong direction (Blue stripe NOT showing) could result in destruction of transmission.
  31. Align thrust bearing assembly so Blue stripe on the thrust bearing assembly is facing away from C1 drive hub. Install thrust bearing assembly into C1 drive hub. See Fig 3. Ensure Blue stripe is visible.
  32. Position C2 drive hub so small end is upward. Install C2 drive hub. Starting with a C2 clutch reaction plate, alternately install 7 C2 clutch reaction plates and 6 C2 clutch friction plates into rotating clutch housing. See Figure.
  33. Align tangs of bronze thrust washer with holes in C2 drive hub and install thrust washer.
  34. Align P1 sun gear so gear teeth of sun gear face concave face of P1 drive flange. Install P1 sun gear into P1 drive flange. Ensure splines are properly engaged. See Fig 4.
  35. While holding sun gear, align double-wide splines of P1 drive flange with double-wide spaces on rotating clutch housing. Install P1 sun gear with drive flange into rotating clutch housing. Install retaining ring into clutch housing. Ensure ring is fully seated. See Fig 4.
