Rotating Clutch Module: Disassembly
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Position rotating clutch assembly onto workbench so rear of assembly is upward. Remove retaining ring from rotating clutch assembly. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Remove P1 sun gear with P1 drive flange attached, then remove sun gear from the flange.
- Remove bronze thrust washer from C2 drive hub and remove C2 drive hub. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . Remove thrust bearing from rear of C1 drive hub or front of C2 drive hub, as attached. Remove C1 drive hub. Remove thrust bearing from rear of turbine shaft or from front of C1 drive hub, as attached.
- Remove 7 C2 clutch reaction plates and 6 C2 clutch friction plates from inside of rotating clutch housing. See Fig 2. Keep clutch pack in order as removed to aid in installation. Remove internal spiral retaining ring from C1 clutch backplate. Remove retaining ring from turbine shaft, then remove C1 clutch backplate from turbine shaft.
- Remove 6 C1 clutch friction plates and 6 C1 clutch reaction plates from inside of turbine shaft. See Fig 2. Keep clutch pack in order as removed to aid in installation.WARNING: The rotating clutch housing and turbine shaft are held together by a retaining ring. Removing the retaining ring allows the turbine shaft and the rotating clutch housing to move freely. When removing the retaining ring, make sure the rotating clutch housing and the turbine shaft are restrained from falling or personal injury and/or property damage may result.
- Remove retaining ring from turbine shaft. See Fig 2 and Fig 4 . Remove rotating clutch housing from rear of turbine shaft. Remove 2 butt seal rings from turbine shaft. Position rotating clutch housing on workbench with rear of housing facing upward. Remove large retaining ring from inside C1 piston housing.
- Position rotating clutch housing on base of Bar and Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, with rear of housing facing upward. See Fig 5. Install C1 Piston Return Spring Compressor (J-43777) or equivalent, onto C1 piston return spring assembly.
- Align notch in C1 Piston Return Spring Compressor (J-43777) or equivalent, with gap in retaining ring. See Fig 5. Install spring compressor tool extension onto shaft of bar and stud assembly. Install ball bearing, washer and wing nut onto tool shaft. Compress return spring assembly until retaining ring can be removed from its groove in the rotating clutch housing inner hub. Remove all tools and completely remove retaining ring from clutch housing.
- Remove C1 piston return spring assembly from C1 clutch piston. Remove C1 clutch piston with balance piston attached. Remove C1 balance piston from C1 clutch piston. See Fig 2. Remove small and large seal rings from C1 clutch piston.
- Position rotating clutch housing on base of bar and stud assembly so rear of housing is facing upward. See Fig 6. Align C2 Piston Spring Compressor Set (J-43776) or equivalent, so that bowl is facing downward. Install compressor onto shaft of tool set and onto C2 piston return spring assembly. Ensure ring of spring compressor tool almost touches retaining ring.NOTE: Piston spring compressor set has 2 notches. Either notch can fit over the ball of the C1 piston housing, but only one notch also leaves the holes in the retaining ring easily accessible.
- Install spring of the spring compressor tool set onto shaft of the bar and stud tool assembly. Align spring compressor tool (4) with one notch of the tool over ball of C1 piston housing. Ensure other notch leaves holes in retaining ring accessible. See Fig 6.
- Install notched spring compressor tool portion onto shaft of bar and stud assembly. See Fig 6. Install ball bearing, washer and wing nut of spring compressor tool set onto bar and stud assembly threaded shaft. Ensure notch of tool remains properly in place over ball of C1 piston housing.
- Compress return spring assembly until C2 piston return spring assembly retaining ring can be removed from its groove. See Fig 6. Move retaining ring over top of spring compressor tool. Remove all special tools. Remove retaining ring from rotating clutch housing.
- Remove C1 piston housing from rotating clutch housing. See Fig 2. Remove C2 piston return spring assembly from C2 clutch piston. Remove retaining ring from rotating clutch housing. Remove C2 clutch piston with C2 balance piston attached. Remove balance piston from C2 clutch piston.
- Remove "O" ring from inner hub of rotating clutch housing. Remove 3 piston seal rings from C2 clutch piston. See Fig 2.
