C3 Clutch Backplate Thrust Plate Assembly Replacement

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If any thrust plate requires replacement, all 3 thrust plates must be replaced as a set.
CAUTION: Use care when drilling through backplate rivets. Once rivet has been drilled through, drill bit may catch on backplate, causing damage to drill bit and/or backplate.
  1. Using a 9/64" drill bit, carefully drill through heads of 6 rivets. Remove rivets and 3 gear thrust plates. See Fig 1.
  2. Set gap of rivet installer to .175" (4.45 mm). If rivet connection is too loose, use a smaller gap. Using Rivet Installer (J-39354) or equivalent, install 3 NEW gear thrust plates and 6 rivets so rivets are flush or below surface of thrust plates. Ensure rivets and thrust plates are not loose.
