Selector Shaft & Detent Lever Disassembly
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
DO NOT remove selector shaft unless replacement is necessary of one or more of the following:
- Selector Shaft
- Selector Shaft Nut
- Detent Lever
- Park Pawl Apply Assembly
- Position transmission so valve body face of main housing is upward. Remove screw from end of Selector Shaft Seal Remover (J-43911-1) or equivalent. Screw body of selector shaft seal into seal. Install seal remover screw previously removed and tighten screw until seal is dislodged and can be removed. See Fig 1.
- While holding flats on end of selector shaft, loosen selector shaft nut so nut on inside of selector detent lever slides freely on selector shaft. Remove detent lever from flats of selector shaft. See Fig 2.CAUTION: DO NOT mar main housing surface around spring pin. An unmarred surface is required to maintain seal between control valve assembly and main housing.
- Place a protective plate on main housing surface around spring pin. See Fig 2. Place a drill bit into spring pin to prevent cutting or collapsing pin when removing pin. Remove spring pin from main housing.
- While holding detent lever and nut, carefully slide selector shaft through selector shaft nut, detent lever, and selector shaft seal hole. Remove nut, detent lever, and park pawl apply assembly (if equipped) from main housing. See Fig 2. If equipped with a park pawl apply assembly, rotate assembly about 180 degrees and remove assembly from detent lever.
