Converter Housing/Front Support Module: Reassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During reassembly, use oil-soluble grease with a low melting point (Petrolatum or equivalent) to temporarily retain parts, butt seal rings, scarf-cut seal rings and hook-type seal rings.
  1. Position main pump assembly on workbench so rear of the pump is facing upward. Align dowel pin holes in the separator plate with dowel pins in the pump body. Ensure bolt holes are also in alignment. Install separator plate onto the main pump assembly.
  2. Position front support assembly on workbench so ground sleeve is facing upward. Align main pump assembly and separator plate with front support so dowel pins and bolt holes are in position with the front support. Install 5 main pump-to-front support bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Align tangs of the thrust washer with slots at the base of front support assembly rear hub. Install thrust washer. It should snap into place. Install 3 NEW butt seal rings onto front support assembly rear hub. See Figure.
    CAUTION: Verify that seal rings are installed in their proper locations. Interchanging locations of seal rings may result in transmission damage. Seal Ring (Part No. 29538158) is installed on front end of ground sleeve. Seal Ring (Part No. 29531038) (2 each) are installed on middle grooves of ground sleeve.
  4. Install 2 NEW butt seal rings onto middle of ground sleeve, then install one NEW butt seal ring onto front of ground sleeve. See Figure.
  5. Position front support module on workbench so ground sleeve is facing upward. Align bolt holes of converter housing/separator plate gasket with bolt holes in separator plate. Apply petrolatum to gasket surface nearest separator plate. Install gasket. Apply petrolatum to outside diameter of main pump assembly.
  6. Install 2 M10x1.5 guide bolts into front support module. Align converter housing bolts holes with bolt holes in front support module. Install converter housing onto guide bolts and onto front support module. Remove guide bolts.
  7. Install NEW seals onto 10 retaining bolts. Install bolts into converter housing and tighten bolts, in a star pattern, to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Align oil seal assembly with main pump body so double-edges face pump body hub. Using Seal Installer (J-43772) or equivalent, install NEW oil seal assembly into pump body hub. See Fig 1. Ensure seal is installed flush to .010" (.25 mm) below main pump body surface.
