Noise In Steering Column

  1. Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? See DESCRIPTION  and VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION  . Go to next step.
  2. Verify that noise is present in the steering column during operation. If noise is present, go to next step.
  3. Inspect the steering column components for looseness. If any components are loose, go to step  10 . If components are not loose, go to next step.
  4. Inspect the SIR coil for noise. If SIR coil is noisy, go to step  11 . If SIR coil is not noisy, go to next step.
  5. Inspect the horn contact ring for lubrication. If horn contact ring is lubricated, go to next step. If horn contact ring is not lubricated, go to step  12 .
  6. Inspect the lock plate retaining ring for the correct installation. If lock plate ring is correctly installed, go to next step. If lock plate retaining ring is not installed correctly, go to step  13 .
  7. Inspect the shaft bearing for the following conditions:
    • Damage
    • Lubrication
    • Wear
    • Proper seating
    If shaft bearings are in need of repair or replacement go to step  14 .
  8. Inspect the spherical joint for lubrication. If spherical joint is lubricated properly, go to next step. If spherical joint is not lubricated properly, go to step  15 .
  9. Inspect the steering column coupling for looseness. If steering column coupling is not loose, go to next step. If steering column coupling is loose, go to step  16 .
  10. Tighten the steering column components to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . After completing repair, go to step  17 .
  11. Replace the SIR coil. See SIR COIL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After completing repair, go to step  17 .
  12. Lubricate the horn contact ring. After completing repair, go to  17 .
  13. Install the lock plate retaining ring properly. After completing repair, go to step  17 .
  14. Repair the shaft bearings as necessary. See STEERING COLUMN  DISASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL. After completing repair, go to step  17 .
  15. Lubricate the spherical joints. After completing repair, go to step  17 .
  16. Tighten the steering column coupling to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  17. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. If condition still exists, go to step  3 .
