Looseness In Steering Column

  1. Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? See DESCRIPTION  and VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION  . Go to next step.
  2. Verify that the steering column is loose. If steering column is loose, go to next step.
  3. Inspect the steering column mounting brackets for looseness. If fasteners are loose go to step . If fasteners are not loose, go to next step.
  4. Verify that the steering column bracket capsule is not sheared. If steering column bracket capsule is sheared, go to step . If bracket capsule is not sheared, go to next step.
  5. Inspect the support screws for looseness. If fasteners are loose go to step . If fasteners are not loose, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the intermediate shaft for worn joints or looseness. If fasteners are loose or joints are worn, go to step . If fasteners are not loose or joints are worn, go to next step.
  7. Inspect the tilt head, support and pivot pins for looseness. If fasteners are loose go to step . If fasteners are not loose, go to next step.
  8. Tighten the brackets to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . After completing repairs, go to step
  9. Replace the jacket assembly. See STEERING COLUMN  DISASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL. After completing repairs, go to step
  10. Tighten the support screws to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . After completing repairs, go to step
  11. Tighten or replace the intermediate shaft as needed. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  or INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT  . After completing repairs, go to step
  12. Repair or replace the tilt head, support and pivot pins as necessary. See STEERING COLUMN  under OVERHAUL. After completing repairs, go to next step.
  13. Verify condition does not exist. If condition still exists, go to step  3 .
