Test E: Wipers Inoperative One Or More Modes

- If wiper/washer system description and operation, and preliminary inspection has been reviewed, and necessary inspections have been performed, go to next step. See DESCRIPTION , OPERATION & PRELIMINARY INSPECTION under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Cycle wiper/washer switch through all switch positions. If wiper/washer system does not operate normally, go to next step. If wiper/washer system operates normally, concern my be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittents, see PRELIMINARY INSPECTION under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- If windshield wipers operate in high speed mode, go to step 5 . If windshield wipers do not operate in high speed mode, go to next step.
- Disconnect windshield wiper motor connector. Connect test lamp from windshield wiper motor high speed circuit terminal in the wiper motor harness connector to ground. Turn ignition ON. Operate wiper/washer switch to high speed position. If test lamp illuminates, go to step 13 . If test lamp does not illuminate, go to step 8 .
- Disconnect windshield wiper motor connector. Connect test lamp from windshield wiper switch pulse delay signal circuit terminal in the wiper motor harness connector to ground. Turn ignition ON. Press windshield washer switch. If test lamp illuminates, go to next step. In test lamp does not illuminate, go to step 9 .
- Disconnect windshield wiper switch connector. Measure the resistance in the windshield wiper/washer switch from the low circuit terminal to the accessory voltage supply circuit terminal in the wiper/washer switch connector. Activate wiper/washer switch through all modes. If resistance reaches 680 ohms or near in all modes, go to next step. If resistance is not at 680 ohms, go to step 11 .
- Remove Instrument Panel (IP) fuse block WIPER fuse (25-amp). IP fuse block is located in driver's side kick panel. Disconnect windshield wiper motor 6-pin harness connector. Windshield wiper motor is located in cowling at left front of engine compartment. Using DVOM, measure resistance between windshield wiper motor harness connector terminals "B" (Yellow wire) and "D" (Brown wire). Resistance values should change smoothly from 450 k/ohms to 25 k/ohms as wiper switch is rotated from slowest delay to fastest delay position. If resistance is as specified, leave DVOM connected and go to step 13 . If resistance is not as specified, go to step 11 .
- Inspect windshield wiper motor high speed circuit for an open or high resistance. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step 15 . If no condition is found, go to step 11 .
- Inspect the windshield wiper switch low circuit for an open or short to ground. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step 15 . If no condition is found, go to next step.
- Inspect accessory voltage supply circuit to wiper switch for an open or high resistance. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step 15 . If no condition is found, go to next step.
- Inspect windshield wiper/washer switch for poor connections. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step 15 . If no condition is found, go to next step.
- Replace windshield wiper/washer switch. See WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step 15 .
- Inspect windshield wiper motor for poor connections. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step 15 . If no condition is found, go to next step.
- Replace wiper motor cover. See WIPER MOTOR COVER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to next step.
- Operate wiper/washer system to verify repairs. If system operates normally, testing is complete. If system does not operate normally, go to step 3 .
