Test L: Air Bag Indicator Always On: Testing

  1. If air bag system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If air bag system diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  in SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Monitor ignition 1 voltage parameter in SIR data list. If ignition 1 voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If ignition 1 voltage is 9 volts or less, go to step  8 .
  3. If ignition voltage displayed is not more than 16 volts, go to next step. If ignition 1 voltage displayed is more than 16 volts, go to ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK in SYSTEM TESTS article in BODY CONTROL MODULES.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) Yellow 34-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If AIR BAG indicator remains illuminated, go to next step. If AIR BAG indicator does not remain illuminated, go to step  6 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check for short to ground in Brown wire between SDM harness connector terminal A9 and IPC harness connector terminal A16. If Brown wire is okay, go to step  7 . If Brown wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check SDM connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step  11 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 .
  7. Check IPC connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step  12 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 .
  8. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Check for open or high resistance in Yellow wire (ignition 1 voltage circuit) between SDM harness connector terminal A1 and AIR BAGS fuse (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse block. If Yellow wire is okay, go to next step. If Yellow wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 .
  9. Disconnect in-line harness connector C200, located at base of steering column. Check for open or high resistance in Pink wire between in-line harness connector C200 terminal C5 and AIR BAGS fuse in instrument panel fuse block. If Pink wire is okay, go to next step. If Pink wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 .
  10. Check for open or high resistance in Black/White wire (SDM ground circuit) between ground and SDM harness connector terminal A18. If Black/White wire is okay, go to next step. If Black/White wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 .
  11. Replace SDM. After repair, go to step  13 .
  12. Repair or replace IPC. After repair, go to next step.
  13. Reconnect all SIR and IPC system components. Ensure all components, connectors and CPAs are properly mounted. Go to AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
