Air Bag System Diagnostic System Check

- Observe AIR BAG indicator while turning ignition switch to ON position. If AIR BAG indicator flashes 7 times, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning indicator does not flash 7 times, repair fault by symptom.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in SYSTEM TESTS article in BODY CONTROL MODULES.
- Attempt to establish communications with Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostics Module (SDM). If communications are established, go to next step. If unable to establish communications with SDM, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in SYSTEM TESTS article in BODY CONTROL MODULES.
- Using scan tool, request SDM DTCs. If scan tool recovers current or history DTCs, go to next step. If no DTCs are recovered, system is functioning properly at this time. Diagnose SIR fault(s) by symptom.
- If scan tool retrieves DTC which begin with "U", go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - CHEVY EXPRESS & SAVANA article. If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with "U", perform appropriate DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in BODY CONTROL MODULES.
