Installation Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Yukon, 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Important: Clean all of the sealing surfaces prior to installing the gasket. Do not reinstall the old gasket, replace the gasket whenever the actuator is removed from the axle.
- Install the steering gear actuator (2) and gasket (1) to the differential.
NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.
- Install the steering gear actuator and cover (2) retaining bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 61 N.m (45 lb ft).
- Connect the electrical connectors to the control module (2).
- Install the differential vent hose (1) to the vent tube (2).
- Install the outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckle. Refer to REAR WHEEL STEERING TIE ROD END REPLACEMENT - Outer .
- Install the drain plug (2) and fill the differential with fluid. Refer to LUBRICANT LEVEL INSPECTION -- REAR DRIVE AXLE (8.6 INCH AXLE) or LUBRICANT LEVEL INSPECTION -- REAR DRIVE AXLE (9.5, 10.5 INCH AXLE) or LUBRICANT LEVEL INSPECTION -- REAR DRIVE AXLE (9.75 INCH AXLE) in Rear Drive Axle.
- Install the bolts (3) retaining the steering gear protection shield.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 180 N.m (132 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Check the wheel alignment. Refer to MEASURING WHEEL ALIGNMENT (WITH REAR WHEEL STEERING) or MEASURING WHEEL ALIGNMENT (WITHOUT REAR WHEEL STEERING) in Wheel Alignment.
