Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Buick Century. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE Battery.
  2. Remove the left and the right engine mount struts. Refer to ENGINE MOUNT STRUT REPLACEMENT  .
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT  .
  4. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE  .
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  6. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts, reposition and secure the A/C compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  7. Remove the 3-way catalytic converter pipe from the right exhaust manifold. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in Engine Exhaust.
  8. Drain the engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT  .
  9. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.

  10. Remove the starter motor. Refer to STARTER in Starters.
  11. Remove the transaxle brace from the oil pan. Refer to TRANSAXLE BRACE in Removal & Installation -A/T.
  12. Loosen the transaxle mount lower nuts. Refer to TRANSAXLE MOUNT in Servicing - A/T.
  13. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to ENGINE MOUNT REPLACEMENT  .
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Use the engine support fixture to raise the engine.
  16. Raise the vehicle.
  17. Remove the steering shaft intermediate pinch bolt. Refer to INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  18. Remove the engine mount bracket with the engine mount from the oil pan. Refer to ENGINE MOUNT BRACKET REPLACEMENT  .
  19. Remove the right lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to LOWER BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT in Front Suspension.
  20. Remove the right outer tie rod from the steering knuckle. Refer to TIE ROD END REPLACEMENT - OUTER in Power Steering System.
  21. Install jackstands to the frame assembly.
  22. Remove the right side frame bolts.
  23. Loosen the left side frame bolts.
  24. Using the jackstands lower the right side of the frame.
  25. Use the J 39505  in order to remove the right oil pan side bolts.

  26. Remove the left oil pan side bolts.

  27. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  28. Remove the oil pan.

  29. Remove the oil pan gasket.
  30. Clean the oil pan and the engine block gasket mating surface.
