Schematic Reference:  Wiper/Washer System Schematics  
DEFINITION: The windshield washer pump is always on.
1 Did you perform the Wiper/Washer System Diagnostic System Check? Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - Wiper/Washer

  1. Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch to the OFF position.
  2. Turn the ignition ON.
Is the windshield washer pump always on?
Go to Step 3  Go to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS AND POOR CONNECTIONS in Wiring Systems
3 Are the windshield wipers always on? Go to Step 4  Go to Step 5

  1. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor connector.
  2. Connect a test lamp from the windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit terminal to ground.
  3. Turn the ignition ON.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Go to Step 7  Go to Step 10 
5 Disconnect the windshield washer relay.
Is the windshield washer pump on?
Go to Step 12  Go to Step 6 
6 Connect a test lamp from the control circuit of the windshield washer relay to battery voltage.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Go to Step 8  Go to Step 11 
7 Test the windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to CIRCUIT TESTING and WIRING REPAIRS in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 16  Go to Step 9 
8 Test the windshield washer relay control circuit for a short to ground. Refer to CIRCUIT TESTING and WIRING REPAIRS in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 16  Go to Step 10 
9 Inspect for poor connections at the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS AND POOR CONNECTIONS and CONNECTOR REPAIRS in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 16  Go to Step 13 
10 Inspect for poor connections at the windshield wiper motor. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS AND POOR CONNECTIONS and CONNECTOR REPAIRS in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 16  Go to Step 14 
11 Inspect for poor connections at the windshield washer relay. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS AND POOR CONNECTIONS and CONNECTOR REPAIRS in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 16  Go to Step 15 
12 Repair the windshield washer pump control circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to WIRING REPAIRS in Wiring Systems.
Is the repair complete?
Go to Step 16  -
13 Replace the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to MULTIFUNCTION, TURN SIGNAL & HAZARD SWITCH in Steering Wheel and Column.
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 16  -
14 Replace the windshield wiper motor cover. Refer to Wiper Motor Cover Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 16  -
15 Replace the windshield washer relay.
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 16  -
16 Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
Did you correct the condition?
System OK Go to Step 3
