Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2004 GMC Envoy XUV, 2004 GMC Envoy XL, 2004 GMC Envoy, and 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the J 21366 from the transmission.

  4. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter made during removal. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
  5. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  6. Install nuts, studs and/or bolts securing the transmission to the engine.

    Tighten:  Tighten the studs and/or bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).

  9. Install the torque converter access plug.
  10. Remove the safety chain from the transmission.

  12. Install the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.

  14. Connect the main electrical connector to the transmission.
  15. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement  .

  17. Connect the transmission vent hose to the transmission.
  18. Install the transmission heat shield. Refer to Heat Shield Replacement  .

  20. Install the range selector cable end to the transmission range selector ball stud (6) and the bracket (1). Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement  .
  21. Raise the transmission to the normal installed height.

  23. Install the catalytic converter assembly. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (4.2L Engine) or Catalytic Converter Replacement (5.3L Engine) in Engine Exhaust.

  25. Install the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement (4.2L)  or Transmission Mount Replacement (5.3L)  .

  27. Install the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  28. Remove the transmission jack.
  29. Install the fuel tank shield if equipped. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement (TrailBlazer, Envoy) or Fuel Tank Shield Replacement (TrailBlazer EXT, Envoy XL) .
  30. If equipped with 4WD install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 126-NP4 or Transfer Case Assembly Replacement (TrailBlazer, Envoy) in Transfer Case - NVG 226-NP8 depending on the model of transfer case the vehicle is equipped with.
  31. If equipped with 2WD install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Rear in Propeller Shaft.

  33. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines at this time, if necessary. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing and Flow Test (J 45096) or Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing and Flow Test (J 35944-A) .
  34. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines (4) to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Body Vin Code 3 LL8)  or Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Body Vin Code 6 LL8)  or Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Body Vin Code 6 LM4)  .
  35. Lower the vehicle.

  37. Install the filler tube to the stud (1) on the right side of the engine.
  38. Install the filler tube nut (2).

    Tighten:  Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (7 lb ft).

  39. Connect the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure .
  40. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid and check for leaks. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure .
  41. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.
