Wiper Inoperative - Rear

1 Did you review the Rear Wiper/Washer System Description and Operation  and perform the necessary inspections? Go to Step 2  Go to Symptoms - Wiper/Washer Systems

  1. Ensure the rear hatch is closed.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Turn the rear wiper switch to operate the rear wiper.
Does the rear wiper operate normally?
Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems Go to Step 3

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the rear wiper relay 2.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the park control circuit of the rear wiper relay 2 and a good ground.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Go to Step 4  Go to Step 5

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a fused jumper between the park control circuit and the wiper motor feed circuit of the rear wiper relay 2.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Does the rear wiper operate?
Go to Step 7  Go to Step 13

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the rear wiper relay 1.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Probe the supply circuits of the rear wiper relay 1 with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
Does the test lamp illuminate on both circuits?
Go to Step 17  Go to Step 6 
6 Repair the open or short to ground in the relay supply circuit of the rear wiper relay 1. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you complete the repair?
Go to Step 21  -

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Reconnect the rear wiper relay 2.
  3. Disconnect the wiper/washer switch connector.
  4. Connect a fused jumper between the rear wiper control circuit of the wiper/washer switch and a good ground.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Does the rear wiper operate?
Go to Step 9  Go to Step 8 
8 Test the rear wiper control circuit of the wiper/washer switch for a short to voltage or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 21  Go to Step 10 
9 Test the ground circuit of the wiper/washer switch for a short to voltage or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 21  Go to Step 10 
10 Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the wiper/washer switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 21  Go to Step 11 
11 Replace the wiper/washer switch. Refer to Wipers/Washer Switch Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 21  -
12 Replace the rear wiper relay 2.
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 21  -

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a fused jumper between battery positive voltage and the wiper motor feed circuit of the rear wiper relay 2.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Does the rear wiper operate?
Go to Step 14  Go to Step 15 
14 Repair the open in the wiper motor feed circuit between the rear wiper motor and the rear wiper relay 2. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you complete the repair?
Go to Step 21  -
15 Test the ground circuit of the rear wiper motor for a short to voltage or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 21  Go to Step 16 
16 Replace the rear wiper motor. Refer to Wiper Motor Replacement - Liftgate .
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 21  -

  1. Connect a test lamp between the relay coil supply circuit and the relay coil control circuit of the rear wiper relay 1.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Go to Step 18  Go to Step 20 
18 Test the park control circuit between the rear wiper relay 1 and the rear wiper relay 2 for a short to ground or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 21  Go to Step 19 
19 Replace the rear wiper relay 1.
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 21  -
20 Repair the ground circuit between the rear wiper relay 1 and the glass hatch courtesy switch for a short to voltage or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 21  -
21 Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
Did you correct the condition?
System OK Go to Step 3
