General Inspection
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 31 other vehicles, including the 2002 Saturn SL2, 2002 Saturn SL1, 2002 Saturn SL, 2002 Saturn SC2, and 2002 Saturn SC1. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
- Does scan tool display DTCs P0036, P0412, P0418, P0443, P0449, P1546, P1689 and U1040? If yes, go to IGNITION RELAY DIAGNOSIS . If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, observe the DTC information. Does scan tool display DTCs P0201-P0208, P0230, P0335, P0340, P0385, P0403, P0404, P0601, P0602, P1359, P1360 and P1404? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. If no, go to next step.
- Check fuse that supplies ignition voltage to ignition coil cassettes. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Is fuse open? If yes, go to IGNITION SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS . If no, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, command fuel pump on. Does the fuel pump turn on? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to FUEL PUMP ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT DIAGNOSIS .
- Turn ignition off. Install Fuel Pressure Gauge (J-34730-1A). Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, command fuel pump on. Is fuel pressure within 48-55 psi (3.4-3.9 kg/cm 2 ) while fuel pump is operating? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect an injector connector from each cylinder bank. Install an injector test light to the injector connector. Attempt to start engine. Does test light blink while engine is cranking? If yes, go to next step. If no, diagnose using DTC P0201-P0206 test procedure. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
- Check for a collapsed air intake duct, restricted air filter element, fouled spark plugs or a restricted exhaust system. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to next step. If no, problem is intermittent. See appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Attempt to start engine. Does engine start and continue to operate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2.
- Operate engine at idle. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. With scan tool, observe DTC information. Are any DTCs displayed? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. If no, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, review the stored information, Capture Info. Does scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. If no, system is okay.
NOTE:
If ignition main relay fails to close, engine will crank but will not run.
