Ignition Relay Diagnosis

- If diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
- Turn ignition off. Remove underhood fuse block cover. Remove ignition relay. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the battery positive voltage circuit for the ignition relay at underhood fuse block cavity. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using test light connected to ground, probe ignition 1 voltage circuit for the ignition relay at the underhood fuse block cavity. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 6.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. With test light connected to battery voltage, probe the coil ground circuit for the ignition relay at the underhood fuse block cavity. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition off. Using a fused jumper wire, jumper ignition relay battery positive voltage circuit and ignition relay load circuit together at underhood fuse block cavity. Using a test light connected to ground, probe oxygen sensor fuse, fuel injector fuse and Trans solenoid fuse, located in underhood fuse block. Does test light illuminate, go to step 8. If no, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect the underhood fuse block harness connectors. Check the ignition 1 voltage circuit of ignition relay at underhood fuse block harness connector for an open circuit or a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative terminal. Disconnect the underhood fuse block harness connectors. Check coil ground circuit of the ignition relay at the underhood fuse block harness connector for a high resistance or for an open circuit. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to step 10.
- Inspect for poor terminal contact at ignition relay connector position of the underhood fuse block. Did you find a condition? If yes, go to step 10. If no, go to next step.
- Replace ignition relay. After replacing relay, go to step 11.
- Replace underhood fuse/relay block. After replacing fuse/relay block, go to next step.
- Clear DTCs with scan tool. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle for 5 minutes. Does vehicle operate normally, with no Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illumination and no stored DTCs? If yes, system is okay. If no, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
