Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Buick Rendezvous. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the engine with the transmission and the frame from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  2. IMPORTANT: Do not disconnect the power steering pipes or drain the power steering fluid.
  3. Remove the power steering pressure pipe/hose from the water outlet. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement (LY7) in Power Steering System.
  4. Remove the power steering reservoir and reposition to provide access. Refer to Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement (LY7) in Power Steering System.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  6. Remove and reposition the power steering pump with the power steering pipe/hose. Refer to Power Steering Pump Removal .
  7. Remove the water outlet. Refer to Water Outlet Removal .
  8. Remove the upper and lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement - Lower .
  9. Remove the camshaft covers. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left  and Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right .
  10. Remove the idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement .
  11. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  12. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Removal .
  13. Remove the camshaft position actuator solenoids. Refer to Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left) Intake , Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left) Exhaust , Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right) Intake and Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right) Exhaust in Engine Controls - 3.6L (LY7).

  15. Remove the engine wiring harness from the engine front cover.

  17. Remove the engine front cover with the water pump. Refer to Engine Front Cover Removal .
  18. Disassemble the engine front cover if necessary. Refer to Engine Front Cover Disassemble .
  19. IMPORTANT:
    • Do NOT use sharp and/or metal gasket scrapers in order to clean the sealing surfaces.
    • Insert a piece of cardboard between the oil pan front and the oil pump in order to prevent any contaminants from falling into the oil pan.
  20. Carefully clean the engine front cover sealing surfaces. Refer to Engine Front Cover Cleaning and Inspection .
  21. Use compressed air in order to remove any engine coolant from the engine cooling passages and the top of the oil pan scraper (windage tray).
