Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If DTCs P0201-P0204, P0300-P0304, P0716 or P0717 has set diagnose that DTC first.
NOTE: If the TCC enable solenoid is not stuck, the TCC PC solenoid duty cycle may not increase more than 68 percent.
  1. Record DTC numbers and failure record information. Clear DTC. Using scan tool, monitor and compare desired speed ratio and speed ratio. Drive the vehicle a short distance at a steady speed. Is desired speed ratio and speed ratio about the same? If so, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If not, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, monitor transaxle input speed. Is there a signal reading on scan tool? If so, go to next step. If not, see DTC P0717: ISS LOW VOLTAGE  .
  3. Using scan tool, monitor TCC PC solenoid duty cycle and transaxle component slip. When driving the vehicle greater than 20 MPH and the TCC PC solenoid duty cycle increases above 68 percent, does transaxle component slip suddenly increase and slipping in Drive is felt? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  5 .
  4. TCC enable solenoid is stuck off. Replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  5. Perform a line pressure test. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. Is the line pressure within specifications? If so, go to next step. If not, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  6. Has speed ratio remained constant since start-up and desired speed ratio changed? If so, go to next step. If not, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Faulty ratio control motor. Replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
