Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
- Start engine. Allow the engine to reach the normal operating temperature. Operate the vehicle within the parameters specified under Conditions For Setting the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR SETTING DTC . Monitor the Lean/Rich Avg. (mS), Rich/Lean Avg. (mS), and Rich/Lean-to-Lean/Rich Ratio on the O2S 1 using a scan tool. Do the parameters show averages more than the Conditions For Setting the DTC? If yes, go to step 4 . If no, go to next step.
- Are any additional powertrain DTCs set? If yes, diagnose affected DTCs first. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to step 5 .
- O2S is contaminated, replace O2S. Before replacing O2S, repair source of contamination such as engine coolant in combustion chamber, silicone contaminated O2S, EVAP canister purge system malfunction, gasoline contaminated engine oil, incorrect fuel pressure or leaking gasoline fuel pressure regulator. When complete, go to step 14 .
- Using scan tool, store the DTC information from the PCM into the scan tool. Clear the DTC Information from the PCM. Communicate with the AF ECM and reset the fuel trim values. Start and idle the engine until the normal operating temperature is reached. Operate the engine under the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Did this DTC Run and Fail This Ignition? If yes, go to step 7 . If no, go to next step.
- This DTC is intermittent. If any additional DTCs are set, diagnose those DTCs first. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no additional DTCs are set, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Check the exhaust system for leaks between the O2S and the engine. Repair exhaust as necessary. Check the O2S and PCM connector for proper terminal contact. Repair the connectors as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 13 . If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect the O2S connector. Turn ignition on. Use a scan tool in order to monitor the O2S voltage for the sensor that applies to this DTC. Does the O2S voltage measure within 351-551 mV? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 11 .
- Turn ignition off. Jumper the O2S High signal circuit to a ground. Turn ignition on. Use a scan tool in order to monitor the O2S voltage for the sensor that applies to this DTC. Is the O2S voltage less than 20 mV? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 12 .
- Repair contamination that would cause O2S to fail. Check for RTV silicone sealant, contaminated fuel or excessive oil or engine coolant consumption. After repairs, go to step 13 .
- Repair the short between the O2S HIGH and LOW signal circuits or between the O2S HIGH signal circuit and a voltage source. After repairs, go to step 14 .
- Check the O2S HIGH signal circuit and the O2S LOW signal circuit for an open or high circuit resistance. Repair the O2S circuits as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14 .
- Replace O2S. After repairs, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR SETTING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2 .
- Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
