Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Montana, 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and 2003 Chevrolet Venture. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
    CAUTION: Refer to SIR CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  in Airbag.
  3. Remove the inflator module. Refer to REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (DRIVER-SIDE)  in Airbag.
  4. If there are no alignment mark on the steering wheel hub, scribe an alignment mark on the steering wheel hub in line with the mark on the steering shaft.
  5. Loosen the steering wheel nut.
  6. Position the steering wheel nut flush with the end of the steering column shaft.
  7. Loosen the steering wheel using the following tools:
    • For Pontiac vehicles, use J 1859-A  and J 42578. 
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles, use J 1859-A. 
  8. Disconnect the steering wheel controls electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the horn switch lead from the steering hub.
  10. Remove the steering wheel nut.
  11. Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft.
  12. If equipped, remove the controls and the controls harness from the steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL CONTROL SWITCH ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT   .
