Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Montana, 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and 2003 Chevrolet Venture. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE  in Battery.
    CAUTION: Refer to SIR CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  in Airbag.
  3. Remove the inflator module. Refer to REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (DRIVER-SIDE)  in Airbag.
  4. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL REPLACEMENT   . 
  5. Remove the tilt lever.
  6. Remove ONLY the steering column LOWER trim cover. Refer to STEERING COLUMN TRIM COVERS REPLACEMENT  
  7. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to SIR COIL ASSEMBLY  in Airbag.
  8. Remove the shaft lock shield and the turn signal cancel cam. Refer to TURN SIGNAL CANCEL CAM AND STEERING SHAFT UPPER BEARING SPRING REPLACEMENT   . 
  9. Remove only the steering column upper trim cover fasteners.
  10. Remove the park lock cable from the ignition lock cylinder case.

    Important:  The lock bolt has spring tension from the lock bolt spring. Hold the lock bolt while you remove the ignition lock cylinder case.

  11. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case with the ignition switch, the theft deterrent module and the steering column upper trim cover. Refer to IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER CASE REPLACEMENT   . 
  12. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case rear cover in order to gain access to the ignition lock cylinder case sector gears.

    Important:  Make a mark (1) on both of the ignition lock cylinder case sector gears in order to ensure proper sector gear timing after the ignition lock cylinder case is assembled.

  13. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case sector gears.

  14. Use a small burring tool in order to carefully remove the lock cylinder position tab.
  15. Use a small flat-bladed tool in order to press and hold the lock cylinder retainer (1).
  16. Remove the lock cylinder from the ignition lock cylinder case.
  17. Remove all of the metal shavings from the ignition lock cylinder case.

  18. Record the lock cylinder four-character key code (1) on the lock cylinder.
  19. Cut a new key according to the four-character lock cylinder key code.
  20. Ensure that the new ignition key operates in all of the vehicle lock cylinders.
  21. Code the NEW ignition lock cylinder according to the four-character lock cylinder key code.
