Starter Solenoid Does Not Click

  1. Did you perform the Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL .
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the engine crank? If yes, see TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS . If no, go to next step.
  3. Is the security indicator flashing? If yes, see DESCRIPTION & OPERATION in DOOR LOCKS & THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM article. If no, go to next step.
  4. Install a scan tool. With a scan tool, observe the Crank Request Signal parameter in the PCM data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display Yes? If it does, go to next step. If it does not, go to step  7.
  5. With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the PCM data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display ON? If yes, go to step  8. If no, go to next step.
  6. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral. With a scan tool, observe the IMS parameter in the Transmission data list. Does the scan tool display Park or Neutral? If yes, go to step  19. If no, see TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR DISPLAY INOPERATIVE OR DISPLAYS INCORRECT RANGE under SYMPTOM TESTS in appropriate DIAGNOSIS 4T65-E article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION.
  7. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM). Connect a test lamp between the Ign Crank Sense circuit of the PCM harness connector and a good ground. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  19. If no, go to step  14.
  8. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the Starter relay click? See Figure. If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  9. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the starter relay. See Figure. Turn ON the ignition, with the Engine OFF. Connect a test lamp between the Ign 1 voltage circuit of the starter relay coil and a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  23.
  10. Connect a test lamp between the Ign 1 voltage circuit of the Starter relay coil and the control circuit of the Starter relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to step  15.
  11. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the Starter relay. See Figure. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the Starter relay circuit and a good ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  21.
  12. Connect a 30-amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the Starter relay circuit and the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Does the engine crank? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to next step.
  13. Does the fuse in the jumper open? If yes, go to step  22. If no, go to step  16.
  14. Test the crank voltage circuit for an open, short to ground or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  18.
  15. Test the Starter relay control circuit of the PCM for an open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  19.
  16. Test the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid for an open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  20.
  17. Inspect for poor connections at the Starter relay. See TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  24.
  18. Inspect for poor connections at the ignition switch harness connector. See TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  25.
  19. Inspect for poor connections at the PCM harness connector. See TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  26.
  20. Inspect for poor connections at the starter solenoid. See TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  27.
  21. Repair the open or high resistance in the battery positive voltage circuit of the Starter relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step  28.
  22. Repair the short to ground in the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step  28.
  23. Repair the open or high resistance in the Ign 1 voltage circuit of the Starter relay coil. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step  28.
  24. Replace the Starter relay. See Figure. Go to step  28.
  25. Replace the Ignition Switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
    NOTE: Perform the setup procedures for the PCM.
  26. Replace the PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  28.
  27. Replace the Starter Motor. See STARTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  28. Operate the system for which the symptom occurred. Did you correct the condition? If no, go back to step  2.
