Diagnostic System Check - Engine Electrical

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Montana and 2003 Chevrolet Venture. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

- Lack of communication may be because of a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.

- The symptom list in Symptoms will determine the correct diagnostic procedure to use.

- The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will collect all the available information before you perform tests.

  1. Perform battery inspection/test. If battery passes test, go to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the scan tool power up? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in BODY CONTROL SYSTEM article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to communicate with Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on the class 2 serial data circuit. Does the scan tool communicate with both modules on the class 2 serial data circuit? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in BODY CONTROL SYSTEM article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES.
  4. Select the Display DTCs function for each module. If using a Tech 2, use the Class 2 DTC Check feature in order to determine which modules have DTCs set. Record all of the displayed DTCs, the DTC status, and the module which set the DTC. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SYMPTOMS - ENGINE ELECTRICAL .
  5. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "U"? If yes, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in BODY CONTROL SYSTEM article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES. If no, go to next step.
  6. Does the scan tool display DTC B1000, B1001 or B1004? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in BODY CONTROL SYSTEM article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in CHARGING SYSTEM article in ELECTRICAL.
