Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK . After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Install scan tool. Command EGR valve to 20, 50, 70 and 100 percent, and then back to zero percent. If ACTUAL EGR POSITION follows COMMANDED EGR POSITION, and then returns to zero percent, go to next step. If ACTUAL EGR POSITION does not follow COMMANDED EGR POSITION, and then returns to zero percent, go to step  4.
  3. This DTC is intermittent. If any additional DTCs are stored, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no additional DTCs are stored, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Disconnect EGR valve connector. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . If ACTUAL EGR POSITION is about zero percent, go to step  6. If ACTUAL EGR POSITION is not about zero percent, go to next step.
  5. Check Brown wire between EGR valve and PCM for short to voltage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  12. If problem was not found, go to step  11.
  6. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between EGR valve connector terminal "D" (Gray wire) and ground. See Figure. If voltage is about 5.2 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not about 5.2 volts, go to step  8.
  7. Using a test light connected to ground, probe EGR valve connector terminal "A" (Red wire). If test light is on, go to step  9. If test light is off, go to step  10.
  8. Check Gray wire between EGR valve and PCM for short to voltage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  12. If problem was not found, go to step  11.
  9. Check Red wire between EGR valve and PCM for short to voltage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  12. If problem was not found, go to step  11.
  10. Replace EGR valve. After repairs, go to step  12.
  11. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC does not run and pass, go to step  2.
  13. Using scan tool, observe stored information. If scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display any DTCs, system is okay.
