Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Install scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, command EGR valve from 0-100 percent. If EGR position sensor remains close to desired EGR position at all commanded positions, go to next step. If EGR position sensor does not remain close to desired EGR position at all commanded positions, go to step 4.
- Observe FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria or as close to FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data as possible. If DTC failed this ignition cycle, go to next step. If DTC did not fail this ignition cycle, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Using scan tool, observe EGR position sensor parameter. If scan tool indicates EGR position sensor is zero percent, go to step 7. If scan tool does not indicate EGR position sensor is zero percent, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve connector. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, observe EGR position sensor parameter. If scan tool indicates EGR position sensor is zero percent, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate EGR position sensor is zero percent, go to step 16.
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe EGR valve connector terminal "E" (Red wire). See Figure. Using scan tool, command EGR valve between 0-10 percent. If test light turns on and off with each command, go to step 10. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe EGR valve connector terminal "E" (Red wire). See Figure. Using scan tool, command EGR between 0-10 percent. If test light turns on and off with each command, go to next step. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to step 9.
- Connect a test light between EGR valve connector terminals "A" (White wire) and "E" (Red wire). Using scan tool, command EGR valve between 0-10 percent. If test light turns on and off with each command, go to step 20. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to step 15.
- If test light remains on with each command, go to step 14. If test light does not remain on with each command, go to step 13.
- Measure voltage between EGR valve connector terminals "B" (Purple wire) and "D" (Gray wire). If voltage is about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to step 12.
- Connect a fused jumper between EGR valve connector terminals "C" (Brown wire) and "D" (Gray wire). If scan tool indicates EGR position sensor is about 100 percent, go to step 20. If scan tool does not indicate EGR position sensor is about 100 percent, go to step 18.
- Measure voltage between EGR valve connector terminal "D" (Gray wire) and ground. If voltage is about 5 volts, go to step 17. If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to step 19.
- Check Red wire between EGR valve and PCM for short to ground, high resistance or open. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Check Red wire between EGR valve and PCM for short to voltage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Check White wire between EGR valve and PCM for open or high resistance. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Check Brown wire between EGR valve and PCM for short to voltage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Check Purple wire between EGR valve and PCM for open or high resistance. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Check Brown wire between EGR valve and PCM for high resistance or a high resistance short to ground. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Check Gray wire between EGR valve and PCM for open, short to ground, or short to voltage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Check EGR valve connector for poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 22.
- Check PCM connector for poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24. If problem was not found, go to step 23.
- Replace EGR valve. After repairs, go to step 24.
- Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC does not run and pass, go to step 2.
- Using scan tool, observe stored information. If scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display any DTCs, system is okay.
NOTE:
If fuse opens, locate and repair short to ground in signal circuit.
