Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Install scan tool. Start engine. Using scan tool, observe MAF sensor frequency parameter. If scan tool indicates MAF sensor frequency is less than 10 Hz, go to step 4. If scan tool does not indicate MAF sensor frequency is less than 10 Hz, go to next step.
- Observe FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria or as close to FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data as possible. If DTC failed this ignition cycle, go to next step. If DTC did not fail this ignition cycle, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Inspect fuse that supplies ignition 1 voltage circuit of MAF sensor. If fuse is open, go to step 14. If fuse is not open, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF sensor connector. MAF sensor is located at air cleaner. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between MAF sensor connector terminal "A" (Yellow wire) and ground. See Figure. If voltage is about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to step 8.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a fused jumper wire (3-amp) between MAF sensor connector terminal "A" (Yellow wire) and ground. Start engine. If any additional DTCs set, go to step 16. If no additional DTCs set, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a test light between MAF sensor connector terminals "B" (Black/White wire) and "C" (Pink wire). Turn ignition on, engine off. If test light is on, go to step 18. If test light is off, go to step 11.
- If voltage is less than 4.5 volts, go to step 10. If voltage is not less than 4.5 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between MAF sensor connector terminal "A" (Yellow wire) and ground. If voltage is zero volts, go to step 12. If voltage is not zero volts, go to step 15.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM. Check Yellow wire between PCM and MAF sensor for high resistance, open, short to ground or short to ground circuit of MAF sensor. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 22. If problem was not found, go to step 12.
- Connect a test light between MAF sensor connector terminal "C" (Pink wire) and ground. If test light is on, go to step 13. If test light is off, go to step 14.
- Check for continuity between PCM Red connector C2 terminal No. 31 (Yellow wire) and all other terminals of both PCM connectors. See Figure. If continuity exists between any other circuit, go to step 17. If continuity does not exist between any other circuit, go to step 19.
- Repair high resistance or open in Black/White wire between MAF sensor and ground. After repairs, go to step 22.
- Check Pink wire between PCM and fuse block for short to ground or open. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 22. If problem was not found, go to step 20.
- Repair short to voltage in Yellow wire between MAF sensor and PCM. After repairs, go to step 22.
- Repair short between Yellow wire and circuit for which DTC set. After repairs, go to step 22.
- Repair circuits that are shorted together. After repairs, go to step 22.
- Check MAF sensor connector for poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 22. If problem was not found, go to step 20.
- Check PCM connectors for poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 22. If problem was not found, go to step 21.
- Replace MAF sensor. After repairs, go to step 22.
- Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC does not run and pass, go to step 2.
- Using scan tool, observe stored information. If scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display any DTCs, system is okay.
NOTE:
Disconnecting PCM connectors may eliminate short to voltage if signal circuit is shorted to another PCM circuit.

Ignition 1 voltage circuit of MAF sensor is spliced to other components on vehicle.
