Test S: Low Eng Oil Level Message Always On

  1. If Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) diagnostic system check has not be performed, perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If IPC system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Start engine Verify LOW ENG OIL message is always on. If LOW ENG OIL is always on, go to next step. If LOW ENG OIL message is not always on, check for an intermittent or poor connections in related circuits. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Using scan tool, select PCM IPC data list. If scan tool does not display OK, go to next step. If scan tool displays OK, go to step  7 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness Clear connector C2. PCM is located in air filter housing. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Connect a test light between battery voltage and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 58 (Brown wire). See Figure . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  8 .
  5. Disconnect engine oil level switch 2-pin harness connector. Engine oil level switch is located in center of engine oil pan. Test Brown wire between engine oil level switch harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No.58 for an open. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  6. Test Black wire between ground and engine oil level switch 2-pin harness connector terminal "B" for an open. See appropriate GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If no problem is found, go to step  9 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  7. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  10 .
  8. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace engine oil level switch. See ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  3 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
