Test I: Brake Warning Indicator Always On

  1. If hydraulic brakes diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform HYDRAULIC BRAKES DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If hydraulic brakes diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Release parking brake. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Using scan tool, observe PARK BRAKE TELLTALE parameter in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) data list. If scan tool does not display OFF, go to next step. If scan tool displays OFF, check for an intermittent or poor connections in related circuits. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect parking brake indicator switch connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Using scan tool, observe PARK BRAKE TELLTALE parameter in IPC data list. If scan tool does not display OFF, go to next step. If scan tool displays OFF, go to step  5 .
  4. Test Light Blue wire between park brake indicator switch 1-pin harness connector and IPC harness connector C2 terminal "L" for short to ground. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If no problem is found, go to step  6 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  5. Check for poor connections at park brake indicator switch harness connector. If no problem is found, go to step  7 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  6. Check for poor connections at IPC harness connector C2. If no problem is found, go to step  8 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  7. Replace park brake indicator switch. After repair, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  9. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
