Test H: Tachometer Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. If Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If IPC diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Verify fault is present in tachometer. If tachometer does not operate properly, go to next step. If tachometer operates properly, check for an intermittent or poor connections in related circuits. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. Turn engine off. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Using scan tool, sweep tachometer. If tachometer needle does not sweep from zero RPM to 7000 RPM, and back to zero RPM during tachometer sweep, go to next step. If tachometer needle moves from zero RPM to 7000 RPM, and back to zero RPM during tachometer sweep, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) self-diagnostics. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  5. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
