DTC P1189: Engine Oil Pressure Switch Signal High: Testing

  1. If IPC diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If IPC diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. NOTE: DO NOT turn ignition switch to CRANK position or engage starter at any time during this test.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter in PCM IPC DATA LIST. If scan tool displays OK, go to next step. If scan tool does not display OK, check for intermittent or poor connections in related electrical connections. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  . Repair wiring or connections as necessary.
  4. Disconnect OPS 1-pin harness connector. OPS is located at front of engine, behind starter. See Figure . Connect a fused jumper between ground and OPS harness connector Tan/Black wire terminal. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter in PCM IPC DATA LIST. If scan tool does not display LOW, go to next step. If scan tool displays LOW, go to step  6 .
  5. Test Tan/Black wire between OPS harness connector and PCM Clear harness connector C2 terminal No. 19 for high resistance, open or short to voltage. See Figure . If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  6. Check for poor connections at PCM harness connector C2. If no problem is found, go to step  8 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  7. Check for poor connections at OPS harness connector. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace OPS. See ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  9 .
  9. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle under CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  conditions. If DTC resets, go to step  2 . If DTC does not reset, system is okay.
