Test F: Fuel Gauge Is Inaccurate

  1. If instrument cluster system operation check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster system operation check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster system operation check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 16-pin harness connector C2. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit 4-pin harness connector C310. Fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310 is located under rear seat. Using harness connector Test Adapter Kit (J-35616-A), connect Red lead of Signal Generator and Instrument Cluster Tester (J-33431-C) to fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310 terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Red wire) and Black lead to ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set tester resistance dial to 120 ohms, 32 ohms, and 3 ohms. If fuel gauge does not indicate EMPTY tank at 120 ohms, 1/2 tank at 32 ohms, and FULL tank at 10 ohms, go to next step. If fuel gauge indicates as specified, go to step  4 .
  3. Disconnect Test Adapter (J-35616-A) and Signal Generator and Instrument Cluster Tester (J-33431-C). Disconnect instrument cluster 13-pin harness connector C3. Measure resistance in Yellow/Red wire between fuel sending unit harness connector C310 terminal No. 1 and instrument cluster harness connector C3 terminal No. 9. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step  5 . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step  6 .
  4. Measure resistance between ground and fuel sending unit harness connector C300 Black wire terminal. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between fuel sending unit and ground. Ground point is located at rear center of trunk. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, replace fuel sending unit. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Check instrument cluster printed circuit for cracks, corrosion and loose connections. If printed circuit is okay, replace fuel gauge. If printed circuit is not okay, replace printed circuit. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  6. Repair open in Yellow/Red wire between instrument cluster and fuel sending unit. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
