Test D: Fuel Gauge Indicates Empty At All Times

  1. If instrument cluster system operation check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster system operation check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster system operation check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Disconnect 4-pin fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310. Fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310 is located under rear passenger seat. Using a fused jumper wire, connect ground to fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310 terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Red wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If fuel gauge indicates full, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not indicate full, go to step  10 .
  3. Measure resistance between ground and fuel sending unit side of fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310 terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Red wire). See FUEL SENDING UNIT SPECIFICATIONS  table. See Fig 1 . If resistance is not as specified in table, go to next step. If resistance is as specified in table, go to step  12 .
    FUEL SENDING UNIT SPECIFICATIONS

    Fuel Level Ohms
    Full 10 Or Less
    Half Tank 30-35
    Empty Tank 120 Or More

  4. Disconnect in-line 2-pin harness connector C300. In-line harness connector C300 is located under rear passenger seat. Measure resistance between in-line harness connector C300 Black wire terminal (fuel sending unit side) and fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310 (fuel sending unit side) terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Red wire). See FUEL SENDING UNIT SPECIFICATIONS  table. See Fig 1 . If resistance is as specified in table, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified in table, go to step  6 .
  5. Measure resistance in Black wire between ground and in-line harness connector C300. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step  3 . If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step  9 .
  6. Inspect fuel sending unit harness connectors and terminals for damage. If connectors or terminals are not okay, go to next step. If connectors and terminals are okay, go to step  8 .
  7. Repair or replace damaged connectors or terminals. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  8. Replace fuel level sensor. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  9. Repair open in Black wire between fuel sending unit and ground. Ground point is located in rear center of trunk. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  10. Disconnect instrument cluster 13-pin harness connector C3. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 16-pin harness connector C2. Measure resistance in Yellow/Red wire between instrument cluster harness connector C3 terminal No. 9 and fuel gauge sending unit harness connector C310 terminal No. 1. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step  13 .
  11. Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for loose connections. If printed circuit is okay, go to next step. If printed circuit is not okay, go to step  14 .
  12. Replace fuel gauge. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  13. Repair open in Yellow/Red wire between instrument cluster and harness connector C310. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  14. Repair or replace instrument cluster printed circuit. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
