Test A: Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Indicates Cold At All Times

  1. If instrument cluster system operation check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster system operation check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster system operation check. Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor 2-pin harness connector. ECT is located on left side of engine, mounted in thermostat housing. Using a fused jumper wire, connect ground to ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/White wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. ECT gauge should move to HOT position. If gauge operates as specified, go to next step. If ECT gauge does not operate as specified, go to step  5 .
  3. Inspect ECT sensor harness connector for loose or corroded terminals. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step. If connector or terminals are not okay, go to step  9 .
  4. Replace ECT sensor. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Disconnect fused jumper from ECT sensor harness connector. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C1. Measure resistance in Yellow/White wire between instrument cluster harness connector C1 terminal No. 6 and ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 2. See Figure . If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to next step. if resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step  7 .
  6. Repair open in Yellow/White wire between instrument cluster and ECT sensor. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for cracks, corrosion or bad connections. If printed circuit is okay, go to next step. If printed circuit is not okay, go to step  10 .
  8. Replace ECT gauge. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  9. Repair or replace defective connector or terminal. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  10. Replace instrument cluster assembly. After repair, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
