Test I: Too Cold In Vehicle
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
NOTE:
Definition: The temperature cannot be adjusted, or the heating is insufficient.
- Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Place mode switch in any position except OFF. Place blower control in each speed position. If blower motor operates correctly for each speed position, go to next step. If blower motor does not operate correctly for each speed position, see TEST D: BLOWER MOTOR INOPERATIVE .
- If blower motor provides sufficient air flow, go to next step. If blower motor does not provide sufficient air flow, see TEST E: BLOWER MOTOR MALFUNCTION .
- Start engine. Place mode switch in vent position. Place blower motor switch in maximum speed position. Place outside air switch in ON position. Place recirculation switch in ON position. If recirculation door operates properly, go to next step. If recirculation door does not operate properly, see TEST B: AIR RECIRCULATION MALFUNCTION .
- Inspect cooling system for low coolant level, loose or worn accessory drive belt, leaking or kinked radiator hose or heater hose, and missing or leaking radiator cap or radiator cap pressure seal. If any condition described is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. If any condition described is not found, go to next step.
- Start engine. Place mode switch in OFF, VENT or HEAT positions. If A/C compressor operates, see TEST F: COMPRESSOR CLUTCH DOES NOT DISENGAGE .
- Observe air temperature actuator drive shaft. Adjust air temperature switch. If air temperature actuator drive shaft rotates, go to next step. If air temperature actuator drive shaft does not rotate, go to step 9.
- Inspect air temperature door and air temperature actuator for a misaligned air temperature actuator, broken or binding linkages or air temperature door, an obstruction that prevents air temperature door from operating within its full range of motion, and missing or misaligned air temperature door seals. If any condition described is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. In any condition described is not found, see HEATING PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC under PERFORMANCE TESTS.
- Test Brown wire between instrument panel fuse block and terminal No. 10 at air temperature actuator for an open or a high resistance. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Test Black wire between terminal No. 7 at air temperature actuator and ground for an open. If an open is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Test Dark Blue wire between HVAC control module terminal B5 connector C2 and terminal No. 8 at air temperature actuator for an open, high resistance, short to ground, or short to voltage. If an open, high resistance, short to ground, or short to voltage is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Ensure HVAC control module connector remains connected during this step. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage from air temperature door position signal circuit of air temperature actuator to ground. Place air temperature switch from coldest position to warmest position. If voltage measured is within 12 volts at cold and zero volts at hot, with a smooth transition between cold and hot, go to step 15. If voltage measured is not within 12 volts at cold and zero volts at hot, with a smooth transition between cold and hot, go to next step.
- Check air temperature actuator harness connector for poor connections. If poor connection is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Inspect air temperature door and air temperature actuator for a misaligned air temperature actuator, broken or binding linkages or air temperature door, an obstruction that prevents air temperature door from operating within its' full range of motion, and missing or misaligned seals on air temperature door. If any condition described is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. If any condition described is not found, go to step 16.
- Check HVAC control module harness connector for poor connections. If poor connection is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step 18. If connector is okay, go to step 17.
- Replace air temperature actuator. See AIR TEMPERATURE ACTUATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When repair is complete, go to step 18.
- Replace HVAC control assembly. See HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When repairs are complete, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If system still malfunctions, go to step 2.
