Test E: Blower Motor Malfunction
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
NOTE:
Definition: The blower motor operates in at least one, but not all, speed positions.
- Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Place blower motor switch in each speed position. If blower motor does not operate properly in each speed position, go to next step. If blower motor operates properly in each speed position, problem is intermittent. Check for faulty connections and/or damaged wiring harness. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step 16.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect blower motor harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe blower motor harness connector terminal "A" (wire color not available). Place blower motor switch in each speed position. If test light does not illuminate in each switch position, go to next step. If test light illuminates in each switch position, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect blower motor resistor harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe blower motor resistor harness connector terminal "G" (Orange wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 12.
- Using test light connected to ground, individually probe blower motor resistor harness connector terminals "A" (Tan wire), "B" (Yellow wire), "C" (Purple wire), "D" (Light Blue wire) and "F" (Orange wire). Place blower motor switch in speed position corresponding to wire being tested. If test light illuminates in each switch position, go to step 10. If test not illuminate in each switch position, go to next step.
- Check suspect wire for open or high resistance. Repair suspect wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 16. If wire is okay, go to step 11.
- Connect test light between blower motor harness connector terminals "A" and "B" (wire colors not available). Place blower motor switch in each speed position. If test light illuminates in each speed position, go to step 9. If test light does not illuminate in each speed position, go to next step.
- Check Black wire between ground and blower motor resistor harness connector terminal "E" for open or high resistance. Repair Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 16. If wire is okay, go to step 10.
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at blower motor harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step 16. If connections are okay, go to step 13.
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at blower motor resistor harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step 16. If connections are okay, go to step 14.
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at HVAC control panel harness connectors. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step 16. If connections are okay, go to step 15.
- Repair Orange wire between blower motor resistor harness connector terminal "G" and HIGH BLOWER fuse (30-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block as necessary. After repair, go to step 16.
- Replace blower motor. See BLOWER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 16.
- Replace blower motor resistor. See BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 16.
- Replace HVAC control assembly. See HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
- Operate blower motor system to verify repair. If blower motor operates normally, repair is complete. If blower motor still malfunctions, return to step 3.
