Test A: Air Delivery Improper

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
NOTE: Definition: Air does not flow correctly from the air distribution outlets.
  1. Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn blower motor switch to OFF position. If blower motor turns off, go to next step. If blower motor remains operating, go to TEST C: BLOWER MOTOR ALWAYS ON .
  3. Place blower motor switch in each speed position. If blower motor operates in any speed position, go to next step. If blower motor does not operate in any speed position, go to TEST D: BLOWER MOTOR INOPERATIVE .
  4. If blower motor operates in each speed position, go to next step. If blower does not operate in each speed position, go to TEST E: BLOWER MOTOR MALFUNCTION .
  5. Except for blower speed, if all other HVAC functions are inoperative, go to step  8. If any other HVAC functions in addition to blower speed control are operative, go to next step.
  6. Start engine. Place blower motor switch in maximum speed position. Place mode switch in VENT position. Place outside air switch in ON position, then place recirculation switch in ON position. If recirculation door operates normally, go to next step. If recirculation door does not operate normally, go to TEST B: AIR RECIRCULATION MALFUNCTION .
  7. Place mode switch in each mode position. If air flows from correct outlet at each switch position, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections, damaged wires, poor vacuum connections or crimped hoses. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, recheck system operation. If air flows from incorrect outlet, go to next step.
  8. Check Brown wire between HVAC control panel harness connector C1 terminal "B" and HVAC fuse (10-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block for open or high resistance. See Figure. Repair Brown wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  21. If wire is okay, go to next step.
  9. Check Black wire between HVAC control panel harness connector C2 terminal B8 and ground for open or high resistance. Repair Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  21. If wire is okay, go to step  17.
  10. Place blower motor switch in minimum speed position. Place outside air switch in ON position. Operate mode switch through each mode position. If vacuum electronic solenoid module audibly clicks on or off at each mode position change, problem is intermittent. Check for damaged wiring or faulty connections. Repair as necessary. After repair, recheck system operation. If vacuum electronic solenoid module does not audibly click on or off at each mode position change, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect vacuum electronic solenoid module harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe vacuum electronic solenoid module harness connector terminal No. 6 (Brown wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  18.
  12. Using DVOM connected to vacuum electronic solenoid module harness connector terminal No. 6 (Brown wire), individually probe vacuum electronic solenoid module harness connector terminals No. 1 (Light Green/Black wire), No. 2 (Red wire), No. 3 (Purple wire), No. 4 (Tan wire) and No. 5 (Light Blue wire). Operate mode switch through each mode position. As mode switch is placed in each position, voltage should change from 0 to 12 volts. If voltage does not change as specified, go to next step. If voltage changes as specified, go to step  16.
  13. If in previous step, voltage did not remain about 12 volts in any circuit tested during mode switch change, go to next step. If in previous step, voltage in any circuit tested remained about 12 volts during mode switch change, go to step  15.
  14. Check Light Green/Black, Red, Purple, Tan and Light Blue wires for open or short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair suspect wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  21. If suspect wire is okay, go to step  17.
  15. Check Light Green/Black, Red, Purple, Tan and Light Blue wires for short to ground. Repair suspect wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  21. If suspect wire is okay, go to step  17.
  16. Check for poor connections or connector damage at vacuum electronic solenoid module harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  21. If connections are okay, go to step  19.
  17. Check for poor connections or connector damage at HVAC control panel harness connectors. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  21. If connections are okay, go to step  20.
  18. Repair Brown wire between HVAC fuse (10-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block and vacuum electronic solenoid module harness connector terminal No. 6 as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, go to step  21.
  19. Replace vacuum control valve assembly (part of HVAC control assembly). See HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  21.
  20. Replace HVAC control assembly. See HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  21. Operate HVAC system to verify repair. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If air delivery is still improper, return to step  2.
