Test I: Too Hot In Vehicle

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
NOTE: DEFINITION: The temperature cannot be adjusted or the cooling is insufficient during A/C operation.
  1. If diagnostic system check was not performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect scan tool. Turn ignition off. Remove RADIO-HVAC fuse to interrupt keep alive memory of HVAC control module unit. Install RADIO-HVAC fuse. Install scan tool. Turn ignition on. Observe DTC list in heating and air conditioning. If scan tool displays DTC B0361, B0363, B0365, B0367, B0441 or B0446, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. If scan tool displays no DTCs, go to next step.
  3. Ensure ambient air temperature is greater than 38°F (3°C). Cover sun load sensor. Start engine. Fully open all panel outlets. Adjust temperature control to maximum cooling. Select panel (upper) mode. Adjust blower speed to maximum. Ensure vent (outside air) mode indicator is not illuminated. If A/C compressor operates, go to next step. If A/C compressor does not operate, go to TEST G: COMPRESSOR CLUTCH DOES NOT ENGAGE .
  4. Place blower motor switch in each speed position. If blower motor operates in each speed position, go to next step. If blower motor does not operate in each speed position, go to BLOWER MOTOR INOPERATIVE .
  5. If blower motor provides sufficient airflow, go to BLOWER MOTOR MALFUNCTION .
  6. Start engine. Place mode switch in VENT position. Place blower motor switch in maximum speed position. Place outside air switch in ON position. Place recirculation switch in ON position. If recirculation door operates properly, go to next step. If recirculation door does not operate properly, go to AIR RECIRCULATION MALFUNCTION .
  7. Check A/C system low and high side pressures. See SPECIFICATIONS  table. If low and high side pressures are within specification, go to next step. If low and high side pressures are not within specification, check for possible leak in A/C system.
  8. Install thermometer near inside air temperature sensor and record air temperature. Using scan tool, record values of INSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE data parameters. If scan tool indicates inside air temperature sensor is near 5°F to -5°F (3°C to -3°C), go to step  10. If scan tool indicates inside air temperature sensor is not near specification, go to next step.
  9. Check for blocked or malfunctioning inside air temperature sensor. Repair or replace sensor as necessary. If sensor is okay, go to step  13).
  10. Turn engine off. Install scan tool. Cover sun load sensor. Start engine. Adjust driver side temperature to 72°F (22°C). Using scan tool, observe SUNLOAD SENSOR data parameter in heating and air conditioning data list. If scan tool indicated SUN LOAD SENSOR parameter is greater than 4.3 volts, go to next step. If sun load parameter is less than 4.3 volts, go to step  15.
  11. Uncover sun load sensor. Direct a light source at sun load sensor. If voltage changes, go to step  13. If voltage does not change, go to step  15.
  12. If temperature need to be set frequently to maintain comfort, see appropriate test based on symptom. If temperature does not need to be set frequently to maintain comfort, system is okay.
  13. Check for poor connection at harness connector of inside air temperature sensor. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Check inside air temperature sensor resistance. See INSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. If resistance is to specification, go to step  16. If resistance is not near specification, go to step  17.
  15. Check for poor connection at harness connector of sun load sensor. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to step  18.
  16. Check for poor connection at harness connector of HVAC control module. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to step  19.
  17. Replace inside air temperature sensor. See INSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  20.
  18. Replace sun load sensor. See SUN LOAD SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  20.
  19. Replace HVAC control module. See HVAC CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  20.
  20. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step  2.
