Test B: Air RECIRCULATION Malfunction

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
NOTE: DEFINITION: Air recirculation is inoperative or is always on.
  1. If diagnostic system check was not performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step.
  2. Install scan tool. Using scan tool, observe OUTSIDE AIR BUTTON parameter in heating and air conditioning data list. Activate OUTSIDE AIR switch. Using scan tool, observe RECIRCULATE BUTTON parameter in heating and air conditioning data list. Activate recirculation switch. If scan tool indicates both OUTSIDE AIR BUTTON and RECIRCULATE BUTTON parameters change state, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate both OUTSIDE AIR BUTTON and RECIRCULATE BUTTON parameters change state, go to step  10.
  3. Start engine. Place blower motor switch in maximum speed position. Place mode switch in VENT position. Place outside air switch in ON position. Place recirculation switch in ON position. If recirculation door operate properly, condition is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If recirculation door does not operate properly, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect vacuum control assembly. Turn ignition on. Probe ignition voltage circuit of vacuum control assembly with a test light connected to ground. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not come on, go to step  11.
  5. Measure voltage between ignition voltage circuit of vacuum control assembly and recirculation mode valve solenoid control circuit of vacuum control assembly. Using scan tool, command recirculation mode valve solenoid ON and OFF. If voltage is zero-12 volts, go to step  9. If voltage is not zero-12 volts, go to next step.
  6. If measured voltage is about 12 volts, go to step  8. If voltage is not about 12 volts, go to next step.
  7. Check recirculation mode valve solenoid control circuit from vacuum control assembly for a short to voltage or open circuit. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring is okay, go to step  10.
  8. Check recirculation mode valve solenoid control circuit of vacuum control assembly for a short to ground. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring is okay, go to step  9.
  9. Check for poor connections at vacuum control assembly. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to step  12.
  10. Check for poor connections at harness connector of HVAC control module. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to step  13.
  11. Repair ignition voltage circuit of vacuum control assembly. After repairs are complete, go to step  13.
  12. Replace vacuum control assembly. See VACUUM CONTROL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  14.
  13. Replace HVAC control module. See HVAC CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to next step.
  14. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step  2.
