Test H: Too Cold In Vehicle
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
NOTE:
DEFINITION: The temperature cannot be adjusted or the heating is insufficient.
- If diagnostic system check was not performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step.
- Disconnect scan tool. Turn ignition off. Remove RADIO-HVAC fuse to interrupt keep alive memory of HVAC control module. Install RADIO-HVAC fuse. Install scan tool. Turn ignition on. Observe DTC list in body, heating and air conditioning. If scan tool displays DTC B0361, B0363, B0365, B0367, B0441 or B0446, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, go to next step.
- Ensure ambient air temperature is greater than 38°F (3°C). Start engine. Place HVAC control module in OFF position. If A/C compressor operates, go to next step. If compressor does not operate, go to TEST G: COMPRESSOR CLUTCH DOES NOT ENGAGE .
- Place blower motor switch in each speed position. If blower motor operates in each speed position, go to next step. If blower motor does not operate in each speed position, go to BLOWER MOTOR INOPERATIVE .
- If blower motor provides sufficient airflow, go to next step. If blower motor does not supply sufficient airflow, go to BLOWER MOTOR MALFUNCTION .
- Start engine. Place mode switch VENT position. Place blower motor switch in maximum speed position. Place outside air switch in ON position. Place recirculation switch in ON position. If recirculation door operates properly, go to next step. If recirculation switch does not operate properly, go to AIR RECIRCULATION MALFUNCTION .
- Check cooling system for low coolant level, loose or worn accessory drive belt, leaking radiator hose or heater hose, kinked radiator hose or heater hose, missing radiator cap pressure seal, or leaking radiator cap. Repair as necessary. If cooling system is okay, go to next step.
- Install a thermometer near inside air temperature sensor and record air temperature. Using scan tool, record values of INSIDE AIR TEMP data parameters in heating and air conditioning data list. If scan tool indicates inside air temperature sensor is near 5°F to -5°F (3°C to -3°C), go to step 10). If temperature sensor is not near specification, go to next step.
- Check for a blocked, malfunctioning, or incorrectly installed inside air temperature sensor. If inside air temperature is okay, go to step 13.
- Turn engine off. Install scan tool. Cover sun load sensor. Start engine. Set passenger side temperature to 12 o'clock or neutral position. Adjust driver side temperature to 72°F (22°C). Using scan tool, observe SUNLOAD SENSOR parameter in heating, and air conditioning data list. If scan tool indicates SUNLOAD SENSOR parameter is greater than 230 counts, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate SUNLOAD SENSOR parameter is greater than 230 counts, go to step 15.
- Uncover sunload sensor. Direct a light source at sunload sensor. If voltage changes, go to next step. If voltage does not change, go to step 15.
- If set temperature needs to be changed frequently to maintain comfort, perform appropriate test based on symptom. If set temperature does not need to be changed frequently to maintain comfort, system is okay.
- Check for poor connection at harness connector of inside air temperature sensor. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check inside air temperature sensor resistance. See INSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR under COMPONENT TESTS. If resistance is near specification, go to step 16. If resistance is not near specification, go to step 17.
- Check for poor connection at harness connector of sunload sensor. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to step 18.
- Check for poor connection at harness connector of HVAC control module. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to step 19.
- Replace inside air temperature sensor. See INSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step 20.
- Replace sun load sensor. See SUN LOAD SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step 20.
- Replace HVAC control module. See HVAC CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step 20.
- Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2.
