Test C: Blower Motor Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Definition: The blower motor is inoperative in all speed positions.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Ensure mode switch remains in any position except OFF throughout this diagnostic procedure. Turn ignition switch on, with engine off. Place mode switch in any position except off. Place blower switch in each speed position. If blower motor operates in any speed position, go to TEST D: BLOWER MOTOR MALFUNCTION . If blower motor does not operate in any speed position, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect harness connector from blower motor. See Figure. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe blower motor relay voltage supply circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  7.
  4. Connect a test light between blower motor relay voltage supply circuit and high blower motor control circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to step  14. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  5. Check high blower motor control circuit for an open, short to voltage or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If a circuit condition was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If a circuit condition was not found, go to next step.
  6. Check blower switch ground circuit for an open or high resistance. If an open or high resistance was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If an open or high resistance was not found, go to step  15.
  7. Check blower motor relay voltage supply circuit for an open, high resistance or a short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If a circuit condition was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If a circuit condition was not found, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Remove blower motor relay from underhood fuse block. See Figure. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe battery positive voltage circuit of the blower motor relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  16.
  9. Using a test light connected to ground, probe blower motor relay voltage supply circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  11.
  10. Check blower motor relay ground circuit for an open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If an open or high resistance was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If an open or high resistance was not found, go to step  13.
  11. Check blower motor relay voltage supply circuit for an open, high resistance or a short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If a circuit condition was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If a circuit condition was not found, go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition off. Disconnect harness connector from HVAC control assembly. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe ignition 3 voltage circuit of the HVAC control assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to step  15. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  17.
  13. Check harness connector at blower motor relay for a poor connection. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If a poor connection was not found, go to step  18.
  14. Check harness connector at blower motor for a poor connection. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If a poor connection was not found, go to step  19.
  15. Check harness connector at HVAC control assembly for a poor connection. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step  21. If a poor connection was not found, go to step  20.
  16. Repair battery positive voltage circuit of the blower motor relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If repair is complete, go to step  21.
  17. Repair ignition 3 voltage circuit of HVAC control assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If repair is complete, go to step  21.
  18. Replace blower motor relay. See Figure. After repairs are complete, go to step  21.
  19. Replace blower motor. See BLOWER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  21.
  20. Replace HVAC control assembly. See HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  21.
  21. Operate system to verify repair. If symptom has been corrected, system is okay. If symptom has not been corrected, go to step  2.
