Heating Performance Diagnostic

  1. If you were sent here from TOO COLD IN VEHICLE, go to next step. If you were not sent here from TOO COLD IN VEHICLE, go to TEST I: TOO COLD IN VEHICLE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  2. Start engine and allow to idle. If engine reaches a normal operating temperature, go to next step. If engine does not reach a normal operating temperature, go to step  9.
  3. With engine idling, select the FLOOR mode position. Select minimum blower speed. Select maximum temperature setting. Feel temperature of the inlet and outlet hoses at heater core. If the inlet hose feels warmer than the outlet hose, go to step  7. If the inlet hose does not feel warmer than the outlet hose, go to next step.
  4. Install a thermometer into instrument panel center air outlet. Secure a thermometer to the heater core outlet hose. Select VENT mode position. Select maximum blower speed. Select maximum temperature setting. Record temperature at instrument panel center air outlet and heater core outlet hose. Compare the recorded temperatures. If temperatures are similar, go to next step. If temperatures are not similar, go to step  6.
  5. Check and repair the following areas of vehicle for cold air leaks: cowl, recirculation door and HVAC module case. If repairs are complete, go to step  10.
  6. Check air temperature door operation and perform any repairs as necessary. If repairs are complete, go to step  10.
  7. Turn engine off. Backflush heater core. Refill cooling system. Start engine. Select FLOOR mode position. Select minimum blower speed. Select maximum temperature setting. Feel temperature of inlet and outlet hoses at the heater core. If inlet hose feels warmer than the outlet hose, go to next step. If the inlet hose does not feel warmer than the outlet hose, go to step  10.
  8. Replace heater core. See HEATER CORE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  10.
  9. Repair the low engine temperature concern. If repair is complete, go to next step.
  10. Operate system to verify repair. If the system operates correctly, system is okay. If system does not operate correctly, go to step  2.
