Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. If powertrain diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check was not performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM TESTS. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Check AIR PUMP fuse (30-amp) located in top underhood fuse block. See Figure and Figure . If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step  15.
  3. If DTC P0412 or P0418 is also present, diagnose affected DTC. See DTC P0412: AIR SOLENOID RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT  or DTC P0418: AIR PUMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT  . If these DTCs are not present, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, enable AIR pump. If AIR pump turns on, go to step  9. If AIR pump does not turn on, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Locate and disconnect AIR pump relay. AIR pump relay is located in bottom underhood fuse block. Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, probe AIR pump relay connector terminal F6. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  19.
  6. Connect a fused jumper wire between battery voltage and AIR pump relay connector terminal E8. If AIR pump turns on, go to step  26. If AIR pump does not turn on, go to next step.
  7. With fused jumper wire still connected, locate AIR pump and disconnect connector. See Figure. Using test light connected to ground, probe AIR pump connector terminal "A" (Red wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  20.
  8. Connect test light between AIR pump connector terminals "A" (Red wire) and "B" (Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  29. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  21.
  9. Locate AIR solenoid valve and disconnect vacuum source. See Figure. Connect a vacuum gauge to vacuum source. Start and operate engine at idle. If engine vacuum is present, go to next step. If engine vacuum is not present, go to step  25.
  10. Turn ignition off. Reconnect vacuum hose to AIR solenoid valve. Disconnect vacuum hose to AIR shutoff valve at AIR solenoid valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to AIR solenoid valve port. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool in OUTPUT CONTROLS function, enable AIR system. If engine vacuum is indicated on vacuum gauge, go to next step. If engine vacuum is not indicated on vacuum gauge, go to step  27.
  11. Turn ignition off. Reconnect vacuum hose to AIR solenoid valve. Disconnect vacuum hose from AIR shutoff valve. Connect vacuum gauge to AIR shutoff supply vacuum hose. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. If engine vacuum is indicated on vacuum gauge, go to next step. If engine vacuum is not indicated on vacuum gauge, go to step  25.
  12. Turn ignition off. Install vacuum hose to AIR shutoff valve. Disconnect AIR supply hose (from AIR pump) at connector, located near left wheelwell. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. If air is present at shutoff valve supply hose, go to next step. If air is not present at shutoff valve supply hose, go to step  24.
  13. Connect AIR shutoff valve supply hose. Disconnect both AIR hoses from AIR pipe check valves. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. If air is present at both hoses, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If air is not present at both hoses, go to next step.
  14. Check AIR hoses for restrictions or damage. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  31. If hoses are okay, go to step  27.
  15. Turn ignition off. Locate and disconnect AIR pump relay. AIR pump relay is located in bottom underhood fuse block. Remove AIR PUMP fuse. Disconnect AIR solenoid connector. See Figure. Connect test light between battery voltage and AIR pump relay connector terminal F6. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If test light illuminates, go to step  22. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  16. Locate AIR pump and disconnect connector. See Figure. Connect test light between battery voltage and AIR pump connector terminal "A" (Red wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  23. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  17. Turn ignition off. Reinstall AIR PUMP fuse, relay and solenoid. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. Check AIR pump fuse. If fuse blows, go to step  28. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  18. Reconnect AIR pump connector. Using scan tool, enable AIR pump. Check AIR pump fuse. If fuse blows, go to step  30. If fuse is okay, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  19. Repair open in Orange wire between AIR PUMP fuse and AIR relay. After repairs, go to step  31.
  20. Repair open in Red wire between AIR pump and AIR relay. After repairs, go to step  31.
  21. Repair faulty ground connection or open in Black wire between AIR pump and ground connection located on top left side of radiator support. After repairs, go to step  31.
  22. Repair short to ground in Orange wire between AIR PUMP fuse and AIR relay. After repairs, go to step  31.
  23. Repair short to ground in Red wire between AIR pump relay and AIR pump. After repairs, go to step  31.
  24. Repair restriction or damage to AIR inlet or outlet hose from AIR pump. After repairs, go to step  31.
  25. Repair vacuum hose as necessary. After repairs, go to step  31.
  26. Replace AIR pump relay. After replacing relay, go to step  31.
  27. Replace AIR shutoff valve. After replacing valve, go to step  31.
  28. Replace AIR solenoid valve. After replacing solenoid valve, go to step  31.
  29. Check for poor connections at AIR pump connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  31. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  30. Replace AIR pump. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After replacing pump, go to next step.
  31. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, go to step  2.
  32. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
